DH Painter & Decorator is a Northampton-based painter and decorator who covers Daventry and the villages around it. We handle interior and exterior painting for homes, as well as commercial decorating for offices, shops and units. Dean and the team bring over 30 years of experience, and every job starts with a free quote.

A painter and decorator for both sides of Daventry

Daventry is really two places sitting side by side. There’s the old market town, with Sheaf Street, the Holy Cross Church and a compact centre that goes back centuries. Then there’s the much larger town that grew around it from the 1960s onwards, when Daventry expanded to take in families moving out from Birmingham. Most of the houses in Daventry date from that expansion or later.

For a painter and decorator, Daventry work tends to split along the same line. We get calls for careful work on older properties in the centre, and a steady flow of practical jobs on family homes across the estates. Because the town also has a lot of business premises, commercial work is a big part of the mix too.

Family homes across the estates

A lot of homes in Daventry were built in the late 1960s, 70s and 80s. They’re sensible, easy houses to live in, and by now most have been through several owners and several colour schemes. When people call us about these homes, it’s usually for one of a few reasons:

  • A full interior repaint after moving in, to cover the last owner’s choices
  • Getting a house ready to sell or rent, where a clean, neutral finish helps
  • Refreshing well-used family rooms, such as hallways, kitchens and children’s bedrooms
  • Painting over the dark or strong colours that were popular a decade or two ago

Covering a deep red or navy wall with a pale colour takes more than one coat of emulsion. We usually apply a coat of primer or a well-matched undercoat first so the final colour is even, rather than piling on coat after coat. You can read how we handle full rooms and whole houses on our interior painting page.

One customer, after we’d first painted their gates, asked us back to do the whole inside of their home:

“After completing my gates I was then assured dean was more than competent to repaint the inside of my property from top to bottom. It’s a large 4 bedroom house and was done to a very high standard.”

Older properties in the town centre

Around the historic centre, you’ll find older brick and stone buildings, some with shops on the ground floor and flats above. These usually need more preparation than newer houses. Timber windows and doors may have layers of old paint, walls may be uneven, and there can be old damp stains that need sealing before emulsion goes on.

If your building is listed or sits in a conservation area, it’s worth checking with the council before changing exterior colours or materials. We’re happy to talk through suitable paints for older walls and joinery when we come to quote.

Weather on the edge of the uplands

Daventry sits higher than Northampton, with Borough Hill, the Iron Age hillfort that was once home to the BBC’s Daventry transmitter, rising right beside the town. Exposed homes on the higher ground take more wind and driving rain than those in sheltered valleys. That shows first on fences, gates and garden timber, and on the south-west faces of houses.

For fences, sheds and gates, a microporous stain lets the timber breathe while keeping the rain out, and it doesn’t peel the way paint can on rough-sawn wood. Our fence and gate staining page explains the prep. For any outside job, timing matters: surfaces need to be dry, and temperatures should stay above about 8 to 10°C while the coating cures. Our guide on the best time of year for exterior painting goes into more detail.

Commercial decorating in Daventry

Daventry has plenty of commercial property, from town-centre shops and offices to the industrial estates around the town and the big logistics sites out towards DIRFT. We decorate business premises as well as homes, including shopfronts, office interiors, reception areas and staff rooms.

Commercial work usually has to fit around the business. We can talk about working in phases, starting early, or working outside normal opening hours where that’s practical, so you can keep trading. Find out more on our commercial painting page.

Daventry: your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call us on 07539 779 036 and we'll happily talk it through.

Do you travel out to Daventry for decorating work?

Yes. Daventry is part of our regular area, about 25 minutes from Northampton along the A45. We cover the town and nearby villages such as Weedon Bec, Braunston, Long Buckby, Welton and Byfield. Just get in touch with your address and a short description of the job, and we'll arrange to come and quote.

Can you repaint a whole house before we move in?

Yes, and an empty house is the easiest time to do it. With no furniture to move, we can work through rooms quickly and paint ceilings, walls and woodwork in a sensible order. If you're up against a completion or moving date, let us know when you call, and we'll tell you honestly whether we can fit the job in.

How many coats does it take to cover a dark feature wall?

It depends on the colours, but going from something deep like red, navy or charcoal to a pale shade usually needs a primer or basecoat plus two finish coats. Skipping the basecoat often leaves a patchy or shadowy result. We'll take this into account in your quote so there aren't any surprises.

Do you decorate offices and industrial units in Daventry?

Yes. We do commercial work alongside domestic jobs, including offices, reception areas, shop interiors, shopfronts and staff areas in business units. We can plan the work to cause as little disruption as possible, for example by working in phases or outside core hours. Call us to arrange a visit and a free quote.

Should I paint or stain my garden fence?

For most rough-sawn fences and sheds, a good exterior stain or treatment is the better choice. It soaks into the wood and lets moisture out, so it won't flake the way paint can. On smooth planed timber, such as some gates, either stain or paint can work. We'll recommend the best option once we've seen the wood.

Does the weather in Daventry affect exterior painting?

It can. Exposed spots on higher ground catch more wind and rain, which can limit which days are suitable for painting and makes good preparation even more important. We only paint outside when surfaces are dry and temperatures are high enough for the coating to cure, and we'll move a day rather than risk a poor finish.

Can you paint rooms in a rented property between tenants?

Yes, landlords and letting agents often call us for this. Between tenancies we can fill holes and marks, paint over scuffs and stains, and freshen up woodwork in a hard-wearing finish so the property is ready to let. Get in touch with the dates and we'll see what we can do.

Do you need to see the job before giving a price?

Yes, we like to. Photos help, but seeing the property in person lets us check the surfaces, the amount of preparation needed and any access issues. That means the quote reflects the real job. It's free, and there's no obligation to go ahead.

After completing my gates I was then assured Dean was more than competent to repaint the inside of my property from top to bottom. It’s a large 4 bedroom house and was done to a very high standard. Once again I would highly recommend him.

Customer review

I contacted Dean to get the outside of the house painted; the house is all roughcast render. He has done a fantastic job; the house is looking brand new. The same he did for our garage, painted our bedrooms x2, did extra jobs for us like skirtings and door frames, and painted even our gates. I could not recommend him enough; he is attentive, smiling, always on time, and nothing too much; I am so happy with what Dean has done; he went above and beyond. I have recommended him to all my friends and family.
