Painter and decorator in Market Harborough, over the county line

Market Harborough is in Leicestershire, but it sits just over the border from Northamptonshire, which follows the River Welland here. Plenty of people in the town assume a Northampton firm won’t travel that far. In practice, it’s a straightforward drive up the A508, and we’re regularly asked to quote there. If you’re looking for a painter and decorator in Market Harborough, the county boundary doesn’t need to come into it.

The town suits our kind of work. Its centre is full of handsome older buildings, from the Old Grammar School on its timber pillars beside St Dionysius Church to the Georgian and Victorian frontages around the High Street and The Square. Beyond the centre, there are Victorian and Edwardian streets, larger villas, and newer estates around the edges of the town, out towards Little Bowden and beyond. Homeowners here tend to care about getting the details right.

Wallpaper, done properly

Market Harborough has a lot of homes with character, and many owners want a patterned paper in the dining room, a statement design on a chimney breast, or a heritage print in the hall. Good hanging starts before the first drop: walls filled and sanded, sized, lined where needed, and the pattern set out so it’s centred on the focal point. Our wallpaper hanging service covers everything from lining paper to expensive designer papers that need careful handling.

Choosing colours for older rooms

Rooms in period houses often have tall windows on one side and deep shadows on the other, so a colour chosen from a small chart can look very different on the wall. We can bring samples, paint test patches in the right spots, and help you choose colours that suit the light and the age of the house. If you’d like more help, take a look at our colour consultation page.

Decorative detail

Some homes call for more than flat colour. We can pick out cornicing and ceiling roses, paint panelling in a contrasting shade, or create a paint effect on a feature wall. Our decorative finishes page shows the sort of work involved. This is slow, careful work, and it’s one of the parts of the job we enjoy most.

Outside the house

Exterior work in the town usually means timber windows and doors, fascias and soffits, and render or painted brick at the back of older properties. We prepare it thoroughly, carry out repairs before painting, and only paint when the weather is dry and mild enough for the paint to cure.

Things worth knowing before you book

  • Much of the town centre is a conservation area. If you’re changing the colour or finish on the front of an older building, check with Harborough District Council before work starts.
  • Paint and paper choices are yours. We’ll advise, but we won’t push a particular brand.
  • Every quote is free and comes after we’ve seen the job, so the price reflects your house rather than a guess.
  • It’s worth reading reviews before choosing any tradesperson. Our guide on how to choose a painter and decorator sets out what to ask.

Market Harborough: your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call us on 07539 779 036 and we'll happily talk it through.

Do Northamptonshire decorators work in Market Harborough?

We do. Although Market Harborough is in Leicestershire, it's only about half an hour from our Northampton base via the A508, and we regularly quote and work there. We also cover nearby villages such as Great Bowden, Lubenham and Foxton. Crossing the county line makes no difference to the way we work.

Can you hang expensive designer wallpaper?

Yes. With costly papers, the preparation and setting out matter most. We check that the rolls match, prepare and line the walls where needed, plan where the joins and pattern repeats will fall, and take our time with cutting around fireplaces, sockets and window reveals. We'll advise on how many rolls to order so you don't run short.

How do I choose paint colours for a period house?

Start with the light. North-facing rooms suit warmer shades, and bright south-facing rooms can take cooler or deeper colours. Paint large test patches in more than one spot and look at them morning and evening before deciding. We're happy to bring samples and talk it through with you when we visit to quote.

My house is in the conservation area. Can I repaint the front?

Usually, yes, especially if you're repainting like for like. Changing colours or materials on the front of a building in a conservation area, and anything on a listed building, may need permission. Check with Harborough District Council before work starts. We'll use suitable paints for older timber and masonry.

Can you pick out cornicing and ceiling roses in a different colour?

Yes. We fill and ease any cracks in the plasterwork, then cut in the detail by hand in your chosen colour. It's slow work, and we'll allow enough time for it in the quote. Done well, it makes a noticeable difference to a high-ceilinged Victorian or Edwardian room.

Do you paint canal-side or riverside properties?

Yes. Homes near water, including those close to the canal or the River Welland, can be more prone to damp and algae on the outside walls. We clean and treat affected surfaces with a fungicidal wash before painting, and use breathable masonry paints and microporous wood coatings where they suit the surface.

Is it more expensive to use a decorator from Northampton?

Not necessarily. Most of the price depends on the size of the job, the preparation needed, access and materials, rather than where we're based. We'll visit, look at the work and give you a free written quote so you can compare it fairly with local quotes.

Can you decorate a room in Market Harborough in just a day or two?

It depends on the room. A small bedroom that only needs a colour change can often be finished quickly. Rooms that need a lot of filling, lining, fresh woodwork or wallpaper will take longer, because each stage needs time to dry. We'll give you a realistic timescale with your quote.

Will you leave my house tidy at the end of each day?

Yes. We cover floors and furniture with dust sheets, mask off anything that needs protecting, and clear up at the end of each day so you can still use your home. When the job is finished, we remove all our materials and walk round with you to check everything.

What customers say about Dean and the team

Most of our work comes from recommendations and returning customers. These are real reviews from customers after the job was finished, in their own words.

More customer reviews

After completing my gates I was then assured Dean was more than competent to repaint the inside of my property from top to bottom. It’s a large 4 bedroom house and was done to a very high standard. Once again I would highly recommend him.

Customer review

I contacted Dean to get the outside of the house painted; the house is all roughcast render. He has done a fantastic job; the house is looking brand new. The same he did for our garage, painted our bedrooms x2, did extra jobs for us like skirtings and door frames, and painted even our gates. I could not recommend him enough; he is attentive, smiling, always on time, and nothing too much; I am so happy with what Dean has done; he went above and beyond. I have recommended him to all my friends and family.

Exterior decorating including fascias and soffits, rainwater pipes, stained timbers and white render prepared and decorated to a good finish, despite the intervention of storm Ciaran in the middle of the project. Dean worked quietly and tidily, using good-quality materials and appropriate access equipment.
