DH Painter & Decorator covers Towcester from our Northampton base, a short drive down the A43. As a painter and decorator with over 30 years of experience, Dean and the team take on interior and exterior painting, period woodwork, new-build redecoration and freshly plastered extensions. We give free quotes after a visit.

A painter and decorator on Towcester’s doorstep

Towcester is one of the oldest towns in the county. It sits on Watling Street, the Roman road that is now the A5, and its main street is still lined with old coaching inns and Georgian frontages from the days when coaches stopped here on the way to and from London. Just outside the town lies the Easton Neston estate, and Silverstone is only a few miles away.

In recent years the town has also grown a great deal, with large new housing developments around its edges. So a painter and decorator in Towcester might spend one week carefully repainting sash windows on a period townhouse and the next freshening up a three-year-old new-build. We do both, and we enjoy the contrast.

What we’re usually asked to do in and around Towcester

Period frontages on Watling Street and the older streets

Older town houses often have timber sash windows, panelled front doors with fanlights, and railings at the front. The key with these is preparation: scraping back loose paint, filling and sanding, and priming any bare timber before applying a quality exterior finish. Our page on painting doors, windows and woodwork explains the process. Front railings get wire-brushed, rust-treated and primed before their topcoats, as described on our metal railing painting page.

The historic centre of Towcester is a conservation area, and some buildings are listed. If yours is one of them, check with West Northamptonshire Council before changing colours or materials on the outside. Like-for-like repainting is usually simple, but it’s always better to ask first.

New-build estates

Homes on the newer developments generally need a first proper redecoration a year or two after completion. By then, the builder’s matt emulsion is marked, and small settlement cracks will have opened along ceiling lines and around door frames. We fill and sand these, then repaint in a washable finish. Many owners use this as the chance to move away from the standard magnolia or white.

Village homes and extensions

We do a lot of work in the villages around Towcester, including Blisworth, Roade, Greens Norton, Paulerspury, Tiffield and Silverstone. Extensions are common here: open-plan kitchens, garden rooms and loft conversions. New plaster needs to be left to dry fully and then sealed with a mist coat before it’s painted, or the paint can peel. Our new plaster and extension painting page covers it step by step.

Towcester: your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call us on 07539 779 036 and we'll happily talk it through.

How quickly can you get to Towcester to quote?

Towcester is only 15 to 20 minutes from us down the A43, so visiting to quote is easy to arrange. We'll agree on a time that suits you. The quote is free and there's no obligation. The villages around Towcester, such as Blisworth, Roade and Greens Norton, are just as easy for us to reach.

My house is on Watling Street and may be listed. Can you still paint it?

Yes, but check with West Northamptonshire Council before changing colours or materials on a listed building or in the conservation area. Straightforward like-for-like repainting is usually fine, but it's worth confirming. We'll advise on paints that suit older timber and masonry, and we'll prepare the surfaces with care rather than taking shortcuts.

Can you repaint old sash windows?

Yes. We scrape back loose and flaking paint, fill any small defects, sand, prime bare timber, and apply exterior-grade undercoat and topcoat. We work carefully around the glass and keep the sashes free-running. If the timber has rotted, we'll point it out so a joiner can repair it before we paint, because paint alone won't fix rotten wood.

When should I repaint my new-build in Towcester?

Most owners wait a year or so. That gives the house time to dry out and settle, and the small cracks that appear in the meantime can then be filled properly. Painting sooner is possible, but some cracks may come back. When you're ready, we'll repaint over the builder's basic finish with a tougher, washable emulsion.

Do you decorate extensions and loft conversions in the villages?

Yes, a lot of our village work is exactly that. Once the plaster has fully dried, we apply a mist coat to seal it, then the finish coats. We paint new skirtings, architraves and doors as well. If the builder is still on site, we can fit in with their programme so the decorating follows straight on.

Can you paint the metal railings at the front of my house?

Yes. We wire-brush off loose rust and flaking paint, treat any rust spots, apply a metal primer, and finish with a durable exterior metal paint, usually in black. Railings on busy street frontages take a lot of wear, so good preparation is what makes the finish last.

Do I need to move all my furniture before you start?

No. It helps if you clear small items and ornaments, but we'll move and cover larger furniture ourselves, protect floors with dust sheets, and mask off anything that needs protecting. We'll talk through what to clear when we arrange the start date.

What happens if the weather turns during an exterior job?

We keep an eye on the forecast and only paint outside when surfaces are dry and temperatures are high enough for the paint to cure properly. If rain or a cold snap arrives, we pause exterior work and pick it up again when conditions improve, sometimes switching to indoor tasks in the meantime.

Do you cover Silverstone?

Yes. Silverstone village is a short drive from Towcester, and we cover it along with the surrounding villages. For a single room, a full interior repaint or the outside of the house, give us a call and we'll arrange a visit to quote.

Exterior decorating including fascias and soffits, rainwater pipes, stained timbers and white render prepared and decorated to a good finish, despite the intervention of storm Ciaran in the middle of the project. Dean worked quietly and tidily, using good-quality materials and appropriate access equipment.
