Decorating a town built on boots and shoes

Kettering grew on the boot and shoe trade, and you can still read that history in its streets. Long rows of red-brick terraces were built in the late Victorian years to house the people who worked in the factories, and many of them are still lived in and loved today. As a painter and decorator, Kettering is a town where you get very good at terraced houses.

We’re DH Painter & Decorator, based in Northampton and working across the county. Kettering is a regular stop for us. We cover the town and the places around it, from Barton Seagrave near Wicksteed Park to Burton Latimer, Rothwell, Desborough and Geddington.

The jobs Kettering homeowners ask us about most

Staircase and landing freshly decorated

Every house is different, but after years of quoting in the town, the same five requests come up again and again.

1. The through-lounge with two chimney breasts

Plenty of Kettering terraces had their front and back rooms knocked into one long living space. That leaves two chimney breasts, a long run of wall and light coming from one or both ends. Getting the colour right matters here, because a shade that looks good by the bay window can look flat and grey at the back of the room. We’ll happily help you choose, and our colour advice service is there if you’d like a proper session on it.

The chimney breasts are also the natural spot for a feature wallpaper. Old breasts are rarely straight, so they need careful setting out so the pattern doesn’t look off-centre. That’s routine work for our wallpaper hangers.

2. Doors, skirtings and a century of paint

Original four-panel doors, deep skirtings and architraves are one of the joys of an older house. They usually carry decades of gloss, sometimes chipped back to bare wood in places. We scrape and fill, sand back to a smooth, sound base, spot-prime bare timber and knots, then finish in your choice of satinwood, eggshell or gloss. Water-based finishes stay whiter for longer; oil-based finishes are harder-wearing on some surfaces. We’ll explain the trade-off. More on this in our guide to painting doors, skirtings and woodwork.

3. Front elevations and bay windows

The street-facing side of a terrace is small but fiddly. Timber bay windows, stone or painted sills, door surrounds and the occasional rendered plinth all need doing, often with limited space on the pavement for ladders. We plan access carefully and keep the pavement clear for passers-by. If the whole outside of the house needs attention, see our exterior painting page.

4. The narrow hallway and staircase

Terrace hallways take a lot of knocks from bikes, pushchairs and shopping. We usually suggest a tougher, scrubbable emulsion here and a durable finish on the spindles and handrail, so it stays looking fresh for longer.

5. Newer homes on the edge of town

Kettering has grown a lot in recent years, with large new developments on its eastern side. New-build owners mostly call us once the builder’s basic paint has been scuffed and small settlement cracks have appeared. We fill, sand and repaint in a finish that wipes clean.

Here’s how one customer summed up a job that grew as it went along:

“I contacted Dean to get the outside of the house painted; the house is all roughcast render. He has done a fantastic job; the house is looking brand new. The same he did for our garage, painted our bedrooms x2, did extra jobs for us like skirtings and door frames, and painted even our gates.”

Kettering: your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call us on 07539 779 036 and we'll happily talk it through.

Are you a local painter and decorator for Kettering?

We're based in Northampton and cover Kettering as part of our regular area, along with Barton Seagrave, Burton Latimer, Rothwell, Desborough and Geddington. It's about half an hour up the A43, so we can visit to quote and work on your job day after day without any trouble.

Can you paint a knocked-through lounge in a terraced house?

Yes, and it's one of the most common rooms we decorate in Kettering. The trick is choosing a colour that works at both the bright bay-window end and the darker back end, and preparing the two chimney breasts properly. We can suggest colours if you're unsure and hang a feature paper on a breast if you'd like one.

Why does brown staining come through the paint on my chimney breast?

Old soot, tar and moisture inside the chimney can work their way through the plaster, and ordinary emulsion won't stop them. We seal the area with a stain-block primer first, then apply your emulsion on top. If the staining is caused by active damp, it's worth fixing the cause, such as a failed chimney cap or flashing, before decorating.

Is it worth stripping old paint off original doors?

Not always. If the existing paint is sound, careful sanding, filling and priming gives a smooth finish without full stripping. Where layers are thick, cracked or clogging the panel mouldings, stripping is the better option. We'll look at your doors and tell you honestly which approach makes sense, because it affects the time and the price.

Can you paint the front of my terrace if it opens straight onto the pavement?

Yes. We set up ladders or a small tower so the pavement stays passable, keep tools and paint tidy, and work in sections. For bay windows and upper sills, we use access equipment suited to the height. We'll talk you through the plan when we come to quote.

Do you hang wallpaper in Kettering homes?

Yes, wallpaper hanging is a big part of our work. We hang lining paper, standard papers, heavy vinyls and patterned feature papers. In older houses, walls and chimney breasts are rarely straight, so we set out the pattern carefully before we start. We can also advise on how much paper to order.

What paint do you recommend for a busy hallway?

For walls, a scrubbable or durable matt emulsion stands up to bags, bikes and hands far better than a basic matt. On spindles, handrails and skirtings, a good satinwood or eggshell is easy to wipe clean. We'll recommend products based on how the space is actually used.

Can you get rid of mould in my kitchen before painting?

We can treat the surface. We wash the affected areas with a fungicidal solution, let them dry, and then use a paint designed for kitchens and bathrooms. Paint alone won't fix the cause, though. Better ventilation, such as a working extractor fan, is what stops it coming back.

What customers say about Dean and the team

Most of our work comes from recommendations and returning customers. These are real reviews from customers after the job was finished, in their own words.

More customer reviews

After completing my gates I was then assured Dean was more than competent to repaint the inside of my property from top to bottom. It’s a large 4 bedroom house and was done to a very high standard. Once again I would highly recommend him.

Customer review

Dean did a great job for a good price i'd be very happy to recommend him always on time polite and friendly.

Customer review

Exterior decorating including fascias and soffits, rainwater pipes, stained timbers and white render prepared and decorated to a good finish, despite the intervention of storm Ciaran in the middle of the project. Dean worked quietly and tidily, using good-quality materials and appropriate access equipment.
