Your painter and decorator for Earls Barton

Earls Barton is known well beyond Northamptonshire for the Anglo-Saxon tower of All Saints’ Church, and closer to home for its shoemaking, with Barker still making shoes in the village. Around the church and the Square you’ll find older stone houses and cottages, with terraces from the village’s shoemaking years and later estates beyond them.

If you’re looking for a painter and decorator in Earls Barton, you probably care as much about how a job is run as the finish itself. In a village, the decorator is parked outside for everyone to see, and word gets round quickly. So rather than repeat a list of services, this page explains how a typical job with DH Painter & Decorator works, from the first call to the final clean-up.

How a job with us runs

Freshly painted roughcast render wall

  1. You get in touch. Call, email or send a message through the website with a rough idea of what you want done. Photos help, but they’re not essential.
  2. We come and look. Dean visits to see the job in person, checks the condition of walls and woodwork and talks through finishes and colours with you.
  3. You get a free written quote. It sets out what’s included, from preparation to the number of coats, so there are no surprises.
  4. We agree a start date. Outside work is planned around the weather, interiors around your household.
  5. We prepare properly. Floors and furniture are covered, surfaces are cleaned, filled, sanded and primed where needed.
  6. We paint and tidy. Work areas are kept neat each day, and we clean up fully before we go.
  7. You check it over. We walk round the finished job with you and sort any snags there and then.

What Earls Barton homes usually need

Cottages and older stone houses

Older properties in the heart of the village often have solid walls, lime mortar and plaster that has moved over the years. They need breathable finishes where appropriate and a patient hand with the brush. We’ll look at what’s on the walls already before recommending anything, and we’ll say so if leaving natural stone unpainted is the better option.

Parts of the village centre may be within a conservation area, and some buildings are listed. If you’re planning to change external colours or materials, check with North Northamptonshire Council first. Straightforward redecoration is rarely a problem, but it pays to ask.

Terraces and family homes

Here the jobs tend to be about woodwork and freshening up. Front doors, window frames, skirtings and door frames take a lot of wear, and old paint that has been layered up over decades needs proper sanding and priming before a new coat. Our page on painting doors, skirtings and frames covers the prep in detail.

Inside, most customers want rooms repainted top to bottom with a clean, durable finish. We cover this through our interior painting service, from single rooms to whole houses.

Gardens and outside spaces

Village gardens tend to have plenty of timber: fences, sheds, gates and hardwood features. Left alone, wood goes grey and starts to split. We clean it down and apply a microporous stain or treatment suited to the timber, so it’s protected without a coating that cracks and peels. See our timber gate and fence staining page. For walls, render and the rest of the outside, there’s our exterior painting service.

Earls Barton: your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call us on 07539 779 036 and we'll happily talk it through.

Do you work in Earls Barton regularly?

Yes. Earls Barton is within easy reach of our Northampton base, between Northampton and Wellingborough, and it's part of the area we regularly cover. We don't have an office in the village, but we're happy to come out, look at the job and give you a free written quote without any obligation.

What does your quote include?

Our written quote sets out the areas being decorated, the preparation involved, the type of paint or finish and the number of coats. It's based on what we've seen during the visit, so it reflects the actual condition of your walls and woodwork. If you want extra work adding later, we'll agree it with you first.

Can you paint over dark wood stain on doors and skirtings?

Yes, with the right preparation. Old varnish and stain need cleaning, sanding to a key and a suitable primer, and knots may need sealing so resin doesn't bleed through. Dark wood often needs an extra coat to get a solid, even colour. We'll check the surface and recommend a paint system that will last.

How do I stop my fence panels going grey so quickly?

Timber goes grey mainly from sunlight and moisture. Regular treatment with a good microporous stain or fence treatment helps it stay protected and keeps the colour longer. Cleaning off algae and dirt first, and applying in dry weather, makes a real difference. Most garden timber benefits from retreatment every few years, depending on exposure.

Is my cottage wall suitable for masonry paint?

It depends on how it was built. Solid walls with lime mortar or lime render generally need breathable finishes, and standard masonry paint can trap moisture. If the wall has been painted before, we look at what was used. Natural stone in good condition is often best left unpainted. We'll assess it on our visit.

Do you snag the job before you leave?

Yes. At the end of the job we go round with you and check the work together. If there's a missed spot, a drip or anything you're not happy with, we sort it before we go. It's part of doing the job properly rather than an extra.

Can you paint a single room, or do you only take on big jobs?

We take on jobs of all sizes, from one bedroom or a front door to a full house inside and out. Smaller jobs can often be fitted in between larger projects. Tell us what you need and we'll let you know when we can realistically get to it.

Do you help choose colours?

Yes. We offer colour advice as part of our service, and can talk through shades that suit the room, the light and the style of your home. For older village houses, we'll often suggest softer, heritage-style colours, but it's always your choice. Testing samples on the wall before committing is a good idea.

What customers say about Dean and the team

Most of our work comes from recommendations and returning customers. These are real reviews from customers after the job was finished, in their own words.

More customer reviews

After completing my gates I was then assured Dean was more than competent to repaint the inside of my property from top to bottom. It’s a large 4 bedroom house and was done to a very high standard. Once again I would highly recommend him.

Customer review

I contacted Dean to get the outside of the house painted; the house is all roughcast render. He has done a fantastic job; the house is looking brand new. The same he did for our garage, painted our bedrooms x2, did extra jobs for us like skirtings and door frames, and painted even our gates. I could not recommend him enough; he is attentive, smiling, always on time, and nothing too much; I am so happy with what Dean has done; he went above and beyond. I have recommended him to all my friends and family.
