Painter and decorator in Brixworth, old village and new

Brixworth is best known for All Saints’ Church, one of the finest Anglo-Saxon churches in the country, and for Pitsford Water and the country park on its doorstep. For anyone looking for a painter and decorator in Brixworth, though, the more useful thing to know is that the village is really two places in one. There’s the older core of stone houses and cottages around the church, and there are the much larger areas of later housing that have grown up around it.

Those two halves need quite different decorating. DH Painter & Decorator has been doing both kinds of work for over 30 years, and Brixworth is an easy trip up the A508 from our Northampton base, roughly seven miles north of the town. If you’ve been searching for a decorator near me from the village, you can read our customer reviews, and we’re fully insured and trained.

Decorating the older stone houses

Northamptonshire’s older buildings were often built from local stone, and the warm ironstone and limestone you see in the older parts of villages like Brixworth behaves differently from modern brick and block. Solid stone walls, lime mortar and lime plaster need to breathe. Seal them in with the wrong coating and moisture can get trapped, which shows up later as blistering, flaking or damp patches inside.

So before we quote on an older property we look at what the walls are made of and what’s already on them. Sometimes the right answer is a breathable paint, sometimes it’s simply leaving bare stone alone and concentrating on the woodwork. We’ll tell you straight if a job is better left unpainted.

Inside, older cottages bring uneven walls, beams, deep window reveals and ledged doors. We take our time on the cutting-in and keep finishes sympathetic, usually flat or low-sheen, because a high sheen on wavy old plaster shows every bump.

A note on conservation areas and listed buildings

Parts of Brixworth’s historic centre may fall within a conservation area, and some buildings are listed. Rules vary from property to property, so if your home might be affected, check with West Northamptonshire Council before changing external colours or materials. Like-for-like redecoration is often straightforward, but it’s always worth asking first.

Keeping the newer homes looking sharp

Across the later estates, the work we’re asked to do is more about upkeep and updating. Common jobs include:

  • Repainting timber fascias, soffits and bargeboards that have started to peel
  • Staining fences, gates and garden timber that have gone grey
  • Freshening up hallways, stairs and landings that take the brunt of family life
  • Decorating new kitchen extensions and garden rooms once the plaster has dried
  • Painting front doors and garage doors that face the weather

High-level woodwork is a good example of where experience counts. Fascias and soffits need safe access, proper preparation of any flaking areas and a paint system suited to exterior timber. Our fascia and soffit painting page goes into more detail.

What customers say about our exterior work

We don’t quote reviews by location, but this one is typical of the exterior jobs we take on in villages around Northampton:

“Exterior decorating including fascias and soffits, rainwater pipes, stained timbers and white render prepared and decorated to a good finish, despite the intervention of storm Ciaran in the middle of the project. Dean worked quietly and tidily, using good-quality materials and appropriate access equipment.”

That combination of quiet, tidy working and planning around the weather matters in a village, where neighbours are close and a job at the front of the house is on show for everyone.

Brixworth: your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call us on 07539 779 036 and we'll happily talk it through.

Can you paint an ironstone or limestone cottage?

Often, but not always, and we'll be honest about which. Old stone walls usually need to breathe, so any coating must be suitable for the surface and what's already on it. On bare stone that's in good condition, leaving it unpainted is often best. We'll look at the walls, the mortar and any existing paint before recommending anything.

Is modern masonry paint suitable for an old Brixworth house?

Not always. Standard masonry paint can trap moisture in solid walls built with lime mortar or lime render, leading to flaking and damp. On older buildings we look at breathable alternatives or discuss whether painting is needed at all. On later houses built with cement render and cavity walls, good-quality masonry paint is usually the right choice.

Do I need to ask the council before repainting a house in the village centre?

It depends on your property. Repainting in the same colour is usually fine, but if your home is listed or within a conservation area, changing colours or materials may need consent. Check with West Northamptonshire Council for your address. We're happy to help you choose colours that suit the building and the street.

How soon can you paint a new extension after plastering?

New plaster needs to dry out fully before decorating, which can take several weeks depending on thickness, ventilation and the time of year. Once it has turned an even pale colour, we apply a mist coat of thinned paint so the finish bonds properly, followed by the top coats. Painting too early risks peeling and patchy results.

What's the best finish for fence panels and garden gates?

For most garden timber we recommend a quality microporous wood stain or a fence treatment suited to the timber. These soak in and let moisture escape rather than forming a film that cracks. Hardwood gates can take an oil or stain chosen for hardwood. Cleaning and drying the wood first makes a big difference to how long it lasts.

Can you work around beams and uneven walls in a cottage?

Yes. Older cottages rarely have straight lines, so we cut in by hand rather than relying on tape alone, and we'll usually suggest flat or low-sheen finishes that hide the undulations. Beams can be left natural, cleaned up or painted depending on the look you want and what they've been treated with before.

Will scaffolding be needed to paint my fascias?

Not always. Many two-storey houses can be done safely from ladders with stand-offs or a mobile tower. Scaffold is sometimes the right choice for taller buildings, awkward access or bigger jobs with lots of high-level work. We'll assess this when we quote and tell you what's needed and why.

Do you only work in the village or the surrounding hamlets too?

We cover Brixworth and the villages around it, including those near Pitsford Water, as part of our regular area north of Northampton. If you're not sure you're within reach, just call and ask. Most places within a sensible drive of Northampton are fine.

How do you protect the garden and driveway during exterior work?

We lay dust sheets over paths, patios and planting under the work area, mask off windows and fittings, and tidy up at the end of each day. Paint and materials are stored neatly and kept off lawns where possible. It's a village, and we know neighbours notice how a job is run.
