DH Painter & Decorator provides render painting in Northampton and the surrounding towns and villages, covering smooth render, roughcast and pebbledash. Dean and the team treat algae with a fungicidal wash, stabilise chalky surfaces, repair cracks and finish with breathable masonry paint. We have over 30 years of experience and every quote is free.
Render painting in Northampton is mostly about what happens before the paint comes out. Plenty of houses around the town, from 1930s semis to post-war estates and newer builds, have roughcast, pebbledash or smooth sand and cement render that has turned green, gone chalky or started to crack. As a painter and decorator in Northampton with more than three decades behind him, Dean treats the preparation as the real work and the top coats as the finish that shows it off.
Masonry painting in Northampton is part of our wider exterior painting service, and most render jobs are booked alongside woodwork, fascias or gates.
What render painting in Northampton includes
- A walk round the house to look for hollow or blown render, cracks, damp patches and leaking gutters.
- A fungicidal wash on any green, black or orange growth, left to work before the dead growth is brushed off.
- Scraping back flaking paint and treating chalky areas with a masonry stabiliser.
- Raking out and filling cracks with a suitable exterior filler.
- Masking windows, doors, sills, pipework, paths and plants.
- Two coats of breathable masonry paint, then a full clean-up and a walk round with you at the end.
Dealing with algae and green staining

Green algae and black mould usually show up on north-facing walls, under dripping gutters and anywhere trees keep the render shaded and damp. Painting straight over it is a false economy, because the growth survives under the new film and stops the paint bonding.
We apply a fungicidal wash, give it the dwell time the manufacturer specifies, then brush the dead growth away with a stiff brush. We are wary of blasting render with a high-pressure washer, because it can strip weak surfaces and drive water deep into the wall. If the staining comes from an overflowing gutter or a cracked downpipe, fix that first, which is where our fascia, soffit and gutter painting often ties in.
Stabilising chalky surfaces
Rub your hand across an old painted wall. If it comes away white or coloured with powder, the old masonry paint has broken down and is chalking. New paint laid over that powder has nothing firm to grip, and it tends to peel off in sheets a year or two later, taking the chalk with it.
After brushing off as much loose material as we can, we apply a masonry stabilising solution. It soaks into the surface and binds the remaining dust and weak render together so the new coats can key on. It adds a day, but it is often what makes the finish last.
Crack repair before painting
Fine hairline crazing is common on render and a textured masonry paint will usually bridge it. Wider cracks are raked out, brushed clean and filled with an exterior masonry filler, then spot-primed so the repair does not show through as a dull patch.
Some problems are beyond a paint job. If a section of render sounds hollow when tapped, or has bulged away from the wall, it needs cutting out and patching by a renderer before anyone paints it. We will tell you plainly if we find either, rather than hide it under two coats.
Smooth or textured masonry paint
| Finish | Suits | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth masonry paint | Sound smooth render, roughcast and pebbledash | Clean, even look. Easier to wash down, but shows patch repairs more. |
| Fine textured masonry paint | Older or patched smooth render with hairline cracks | Hides repairs and bridges fine crazing. Uses more paint and holds dirt a little more. |
| Mineral or lime-compatible paint | Lime render on older solid-walled buildings | Keeps the wall breathing. Standard masonry paint is not the right choice here. |
Roughcast and pebbledash already have plenty of texture, so a smooth masonry paint is the usual choice on those.
Why breathability matters

Render and the masonry behind it take in moisture and let it out again. A good masonry paint is vapour permeable, so dampness in the wall can still escape. Seal the surface with something that does not breathe and water gets trapped, which leads to blistering, and in a hard frost it can freeze and loosen the render. We stick to breathable products and check what the wall is made of first.
Roughcast painting and pebbledash coverage
Roughcast painting uses a lot more paint than people expect. All those peaks and hollows add up to far more surface area than a flat wall of the same size, so coverage per litre drops sharply. We allow for that in the quote.
We apply it with a long-pile roller worked in several directions and follow up with a masonry brush to push paint into the gaps between stones. Miss those and you get tiny specks of the old colour showing through. On pebbledash we tap off loose stones first. A second coat is almost always needed for an even, solid colour.
“I contacted Dean to get the outside of the house painted; the house is all roughcast render. He has done a fantastic job; the house is looking brand new. The same he did for our garage, painted our bedrooms x2, did extra jobs for us like skirtings and door frames, and painted even our gates.” A customer review
If your gates or railings need doing at the same time, we can add metal gate and railing painting to the same visit. For a deeper look at products and prep, read our guide to painting render and roughcast.
Weather and timing
Masonry paint needs dry walls and steady temperatures, generally above about 8 to 10°C, with no frost overnight and no rain due before it has dried. Late spring to early autumn is the main season. In autumn, heavy morning dew can leave a wall damp until late morning, so we plan each elevation around the sun and the forecast.
