DH Painter & Decorator is an experienced painter and decorator serving Moulton, the village just north of Northampton. With over 30 years in the trade, Dean and the team cover interior decorating, exterior painting, metal gates and railings, wallpaper and commercial units, and offer free quotes and practical advice on every job.

Your painter and decorator in Moulton, just up the road

Moulton sits just north of Northampton, close enough to feel part of the town but still very much a village. It has its older streets of stone houses around the church, its link with William Carey, the Baptist missionary who lived and preached here in the 1780s, and Moulton College on the edge of the village. For a painter and decorator Moulton is about as local as it gets for us, only a few miles from our Northampton base.

That short distance makes a practical difference. We can pop over to quote without a long wait, keep an eye on the weather for exterior jobs and get back quickly if a dry spell opens up. Dean has over 30 years of experience and works with a handpicked team of skilled craftsmen, and we’re fully insured and trained. So if you’ve been searching for painters and decorators near me from Moulton, we’re a short drive away.

A year of decorating in Moulton

Rather than list every service, it’s more useful to think about what makes sense at each time of year. This is roughly how we’d plan work for a Moulton home.

Winter: inside jobs

Cold, damp months are the time for interiors. Bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens and full repaints all go ahead happily with the heating on. It’s also a good time for wallpaper, as a warm, steady room helps paper dry evenly. Our interior painting covers walls, ceilings and all the woodwork, with filling, sanding and caulking done before any paint goes on.

Spring: book and prepare

Exterior diaries fill up quickly once the evenings get lighter, so spring is when to get quotes sorted. It’s also when you’ll see what winter has done: flaking sills, split paint on front doors and green algae on north-facing render. We’ll note it all when we visit so nothing is missed on the quote.

Summer: outside work

Warm, dry, settled weather is ideal for masonry, fascias, windows and doors. Paint needs dry surfaces and temperatures ideally above 8 to 10°C, and we avoid starting too early on dewy mornings or leaving fresh paint where it’ll catch the evening damp. There’s more on timing in our guide to the best time of year for exterior painting.

Autumn: metalwork and finishing off

Early autumn often still gives good painting days, and it’s a sensible time to protect gates, railings and garden timber before winter. Rust spreads quickly once the paint breaks down, so catching it now saves more work later.

Gates, railings and the jobs that grow from them

Plenty of village homes have a metal gate or a run of railings at the front. Once the paint starts to fail, rust creeps under it and the whole thing looks neglected. We wire-brush and sand back loose rust, treat and prime bare metal, then build up the finish coats. Our gate and railing painting page explains how we do it.

It’s often the small outdoor job that leads to something bigger. This customer review shows how that tends to go:

“After completing my gates I was then assured dean was more than competent to repaint the inside of my property from top to bottom. It’s a large 4 bedroom house and was done to a very high standard.”

Older cottages and newer homes

Moulton has a real mix of housing. The older stone properties in the heart of the village want a gentle approach, with breathable finishes where the walls need them and careful hand cutting-in on uneven plaster. The newer houses around the village are usually about refreshing tired paintwork, updating colours and keeping exterior woodwork in good order.

If your home is in the historic part of the village, it may be within a conservation area. For most redecoration that doesn’t change much, but if you’re planning a noticeably different exterior colour or finish, it’s worth checking with West Northamptonshire Council first.

Inside, many people want a change of look as well as a repaint. We can hang lining paper, feature papers and full rooms through our wallpaper hanging service.

We also take on commercial work for offices, units and shopfronts, including businesses around Moulton Park on the northern edge of Northampton. We can plan the work to fit how your premises operate, working in sections to keep disruption down. Find out more about our painting for businesses.

Moulton: your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call us on 07539 779 036 and we'll happily talk it through.

How far do you travel to Moulton?

Not far at all. Moulton is only a few miles north of Northampton, so it's right in the middle of the area we cover. That makes it easy for us to come out and quote, and to make the most of short dry spells when we're working on the outside of a house.

When should I book exterior painting in Moulton?

Ideally get your quote in late winter or spring, so you're booked in for the drier, warmer months. Exterior paint needs dry surfaces and temperatures ideally above 8 to 10°C to cure properly. Summer and early autumn are usually best. Waiting until the first sunny week often means a longer wait for a slot.

Can you restore a rusty metal gate rather than replace it?

Usually, yes, as long as the metal is still sound. We remove loose rust and flaking paint, treat and prime the bare areas, then apply finish coats suited to exterior metal. Badly corroded or broken sections may need a fabricator first. We'll tell you honestly if a gate is past saving.

Do you decorate student or rental properties near Moulton College?

Yes. We decorate rented homes as well as owner-occupied ones, and landlords often want hard-wearing finishes that are easy to touch up between tenancies. We can work between lets and keep to a clear timescale. Let us know access arrangements when you request a quote and we'll plan the job around them.

Is winter a bad time to have decorators in?

Not for inside work. Winter is a good time for interiors, as long as the house is heated and has some ventilation so paint can dry. Wallpaper and interior woodwork go ahead fine. What we avoid in winter is exterior painting, because cold, damp and frost stop paint curing properly.

What colours work in an older village cottage?

Softer, slightly muted colours tend to sit well in older stone properties, especially in flat or low-sheen finishes that don't highlight uneven plaster. That said, it's your home. If you'd like help deciding, we offer colour advice and can suggest shades that work with the light, the room's size and features such as beams or deep reveals.

Can you paint the inside of our unit at Moulton Park while we're trading?

Often we can. We'll discuss your working hours and plan the job in sections, so part of the premises stays usable while we work on another. Water-based paints keep smells down, and we protect stock, equipment and floors throughout. Tell us about deliveries or busy periods and we'll work around them.

Will you move my furniture?

We'll move and cover furniture as needed to get the job done, and protect floors with dust sheets. It helps if you clear small items, ornaments and anything fragile or valuable beforehand. Very heavy pieces such as pianos or full wardrobes are best discussed when we quote so we can plan around them.

Do you give fixed quotes?

Yes. We visit, look at the job properly and give you a free written quote, so you know the price before we start. The quote covers the preparation, materials and finish we've discussed. If you ask for extra work along the way, we'll agree it with you first.

I contacted Dean to get the outside of the house painted; the house is all roughcast render. He has done a fantastic job; the house is looking brand new. The same he did for our garage, painted our bedrooms x2, did extra jobs for us like skirtings and door frames, and painted even our gates. I could not recommend him enough; he is attentive, smiling, always on time, and nothing too much; I am so happy with what Dean has done; he went above and beyond. I have recommended him to all my friends and family.

Exterior decorating including fascias and soffits, rainwater pipes, stained timbers and white render prepared and decorated to a good finish, despite the intervention of storm Ciaran in the middle of the project. Dean worked quietly and tidily, using good-quality materials and appropriate access equipment.
