DH Painter & Decorator is a Northampton painter and decorator covering Duston and the west side of town. With over 30 years of experience, Dean and the team decorate hallways, stairs and landings, living spaces, new plaster and extensions, wallpaper and exteriors for Duston homes, with free quotes and honest advice.

A local painter and decorator for Duston homes

Duston is part of Northampton, but ask anyone who lives there and they’ll tell you it’s still Duston. It has its old village heart around St Luke’s Church, with stone cottages and walls that go back a long way, and then a great deal of later housing stretching out between Harlestone Road and Weedon Road. Neighbouring Upton has added a lot of newer homes on this side of town too.

That makes it one of the most varied areas we work in, and one of the easiest to reach. As a painter and decorator in Duston’s own corner of Northampton, we’re only a short drive from most jobs, which helps when we’re quoting, planning around the weather or popping back to finish a small snag.

Matching the job to the house

Different parts of Duston tend to need different things. This is a rough guide to what we see most often.

Type of homeWhat it usually needs
Older stone cottages in the village coreCareful prep on uneven plaster, breathable finishes where walls need them, attention to period woodwork
Established family estatesHallway, stairs and landing refreshes, colour updates, repainting fascias, soffits and doors
Newer builds nearbyReplacing builder’s paint, dealing with settlement cracks, mist coats on new plaster in extensions

Hallways, stairs and landings

If there’s one job we’re asked to do more than any other in family areas like Duston, it’s the hall, stairs and landing. It’s the first thing visitors see, and it gets knocked by bikes, school bags, pushchairs and the weekly shop. It’s also the awkward one to do yourself because of the height over the stairwell.

We set up safe access over the stairs, fill and sand dents and cracks, caulk along skirtings and strings, and use hard-wearing finishes on walls and woodwork so the space stays looking good for longer. More detail is on our hallway, stairs and landing decorating page. One customer review describes exactly this kind of job:

“Dean did some painting and decorating in my hallway, landing and stairs for me recently. He did an excellent job; takes great pride in his work and has good attention to detail.”

New builds and new plaster

Newer homes come with their own issues. Builders often use a thin trade emulsion that marks easily, and as a new house dries out and settles you’ll often see hairline cracks at ceiling lines and around door frames. We fill these properly before repainting so they don’t reappear straight away.

Extensions are a big part of our work on this side of town too. Fresh plaster must be dry before decorating, and the first coat should be a mist coat so the finish bonds rather than peeling. We’ve decorated open-plan kitchen extensions with roof lanterns and know how to handle the high reveals. See our page on decorating new extensions for the full process.

Inside and out

Beyond halls and extensions, Duston customers regularly ask us for:

  • Feature walls and full rooms with our wallpapering service
  • Bedrooms and living rooms repainted top to bottom, including skirtings and door frames
  • Fascias, soffits, windows and doors through our exterior decorating work
  • Garden gates and fences stained or painted

If your home is in the older part of the village, check with West Northamptonshire Council before any major change to the outside, as conservation rules can apply to some historic areas. For ordinary redecoration on most Duston homes, that isn’t an issue.

Duston: your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call us on 07539 779 036 and we'll happily talk it through.

Is Duston covered as part of Northampton?

Yes. Duston is on the west side of Northampton and well within the area we regularly cover. That includes the old village, New Duston and the neighbouring areas such as Upton. Wherever you are on this side of town, we can come out to see the job and give you a free quote.

Why do cracks keep appearing in my new-build house?

It's very common. New houses dry out and settle during their first few years, and timber and plaster shrink slightly, which opens hairline cracks at ceiling joints and around frames. We rake out, fill and sand these, and use flexible caulk where walls meet woodwork. Leaving decorating until the house has settled a little also helps.

Can you paint over the builder's emulsion in a new home?

Yes. Builder's trade emulsion is often thin and marks easily, but it gives a reasonable base. We clean and prepare the walls, fill any cracks and nail pops, then apply quality emulsion that stands up better to everyday life. In kitchens and hallways we'll often suggest a more wipeable finish.

How do you reach the high wall above the stairs?

We use proper stair access equipment, such as adjustable ladders, stair platforms or boards set up safely over the stairwell. It's the part of the hall most people can't reach themselves, and doing it safely is part of the job. We protect the stair carpet and banister while we work.

How long does a hall, stairs and landing take to decorate?

Most halls take a few days, depending on the size, the amount of woodwork, whether there's wallpaper to strip and how much repair the walls need. Spindles and banisters add time. We'll give you a realistic idea with the quote and keep you updated so you can plan around it.

What's a hard-wearing paint for a busy family hallway?

A durable or scrubbable matt or eggshell emulsion is a good choice for walls, as it can be wiped without polishing up. For skirtings, doors and banisters, a water-based satinwood is tough and stays white. We'll suggest specific finishes to suit how your household uses the space.

Can you decorate our kitchen extension straight after the builders leave?

Not straight away if it's newly plastered. Plaster needs to dry fully first, which can take a few weeks. Once it's ready, we apply a mist coat followed by top coats. If the timing is tight, talk to us early and we'll plan the decorating around your builder's schedule.

Do you remove old wallpaper before painting?

Yes. We can strip old paper, wash down the walls to remove paste residue, and repair any damage to the plaster underneath before painting or re-papering. Occasionally the plaster behind old paper needs more work than expected, and if so we'll tell you before going further.

Will you paint the outside of my house as well?

Yes. Alongside interiors we paint fascias, soffits, windows, doors, render and garden timber. Exterior work is planned for dry, mild weather, so it's best to book the outside for the warmer months. We can quote for inside and outside together or separately, whichever suits you.

More customer reviews

I contacted Dean to get the outside of the house painted; the house is all roughcast render. He has done a fantastic job; the house is looking brand new. The same he did for our garage, painted our bedrooms x2, did extra jobs for us like skirtings and door frames, and painted even our gates. I could not recommend him enough; he is attentive, smiling, always on time, and nothing too much; I am so happy with what Dean has done; he went above and beyond. I have recommended him to all my friends and family.

Customer review

Exterior decorating including fascias and soffits, rainwater pipes, stained timbers and white render prepared and decorated to a good finish, despite the intervention of storm Ciaran in the middle of the project. Dean worked quietly and tidily, using good-quality materials and appropriate access equipment.
