New plaster painting in Northampton, done in the right order
Freshly plastered walls look ready to paint long before they are. Paint them too soon, or with the wrong product, and you end up with peeling, blistering or patchy colour within months. New plaster painting in Northampton makes up a good share of our work, from a single re-skimmed bedroom to a large open-plan extension, and the same rules apply to both.
DH Painter & Decorator has over 30 years’ experience decorating new plaster. Our extension work includes an open-plan kitchen extension with a roof lantern, exactly the kind of high, bright space this page covers, and you can see finished jobs in our work gallery.
How long new plaster needs to dry

Plaster dries by losing water into the air, and how long that takes depends on thickness, the background it’s on, temperature, ventilation and time of year. As a rough rule, a thin skim over plasterboard dries far quicker than a skim over a fresh backing coat on block or brick. A new extension in autumn or winter, with a damp screed floor still drying out, takes longer again.
The colour tells you a lot. Wet plaster is dark pink or brown. As it dries it turns an even, pale pink. Darker patches mean moisture is still coming out, often in corners, behind radiators or around window reveals. We check the whole room, not just the easy walls.
Don’t crank up the heating to speed it along, as drying too fast can cause cracking. Steady warmth with ventilation works better.
Mist coats and why contract matt is used
Bare plaster is very porous. Normal emulsion painted straight on gets sucked in unevenly and can form a skin that doesn’t bond properly. A mist coat seals the surface and gives the finish coats something to grip.
A mist coat is usually a breathable matt emulsion thinned with water, often a contract matt, following the paint maker’s guidance on dilution. Some decorators use a dedicated new plaster primer instead. Either way, the aim is a coat that soaks in and binds to the plaster rather than sitting on top.
Contract matt is favoured for this because it’s breathable. Any moisture left in the plaster can still escape through it. That’s also why vinyl emulsions (vinyl matt, vinyl silk and many washable finishes) shouldn’t go directly onto fresh plaster. They form a tighter film that can trap moisture and lead to peeling or blistering. Once the plaster is fully dry and sealed, a more durable finish can go on top if needed.
| Stage | What happens | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Drying | Plaster left to dry with ventilation | Even, pale pink with no dark patches |
| Mist coat | Diluted breathable matt or new plaster primer | Even absorption, no flaking |
| Snagging | Fill, sand and caulk what the mist coat reveals | Hairline cracks, trowel marks, dings |
| Finish coats | Usually two full coats of the chosen emulsion | Solid colour, no grinning through |
| Woodwork | New skirtings, architraves and doors primed and painted | Sealed MDF edges, caulked joints |
Painting a new extension in Northampton
A new extension brings together a lot of new surfaces at once, often with other trades still working around you. Painting a new extension in Northampton usually means fresh plaster on walls and ceilings, new MDF skirtings and architraves, new doors and frames, and sometimes a vaulted ceiling or roof lantern.
Timing with the kitchen fitter matters. It’s often best to get ceilings finished and walls mist-coated before units go in, then complete the finish coats and snagging once fitting is done. That avoids cutting in around wall units on raw plaster and means the areas behind appliances are sealed. We’re happy to talk to your builder about sequencing.
New MDF skirtings usually arrive primed, but cut ends and routed edges are bare and soak up paint. They need sealing, then filling, caulking and top coats. Our door and skirting painting page covers that side of the job in more detail.
Roof lanterns and high ceilings

Roof lanterns and vaulted ceilings are what make modern extensions feel bright, and they’re also the trickiest parts to decorate. The plastered upstand around a lantern is several feet above floor level and often sits over the middle of the room, so it needs a mobile tower or podium rather than a stepladder. We protect new flooring and worktops before any access equipment goes up.
Upstands also show every flaw. Light pours straight down across them, so any ridge, trowel mark or poor cutting-in line against the lantern frame is obvious. They get extra attention at the snagging stage. Lantern frames themselves are usually factory-finished aluminium or uPVC, which we mask and protect rather than paint.
A shade that looks soft in the old part of the house can look much paler under a lantern. Our colour consultation helps you pick colours that hold together across old and new parts of the house.
Snagging new plaster properly
The mist coat shows up defects you can’t see on bare plaster. Typical snags include:
- Hairline cracks at plasterboard joints and where old walls meet new.
- Trowel marks, pin holes and small ridges on the skim.
- Dings on corners from other trades carrying materials through.
- Gaps at the wall and ceiling junction and around new window reveals.
We fill, sand and spot-seal these before the finish coats. New buildings also move a little as timbers and blockwork dry out over the first months, so some fine shrinkage cracks can appear later. That’s normal, and we’ll explain what to expect so it doesn’t come as a surprise.
