DH Painter & Decorator paints the interiors of houses and flats in White Hills, the NN2 district about 2.8 miles north of Northampton town centre. Dean, with over 30 years in the trade, handles inter-war estate houses, large detached homes and retirement flats, and quotes free after a visit.
Three kinds of home inside one small district
Interior jobs in White Hills tend to fall into three quite different types, and the first thing Dean asks on a visit is which one you live in. The original estate went up in the 1930s opposite Kingsthorpe Cemetery, on streets such as White Hills Crescent and White Hills Way. Along Harborough Road North stand larger detached houses built one at a time on generous plots, one of them around 2,226 sq ft on roughly 0.4 acre. And on Welford Road, Wardington Court holds one- and two-bedroom retirement flats. Each has its own surfaces, its own pace of work and its own reason for redecorating, so the quote is built around the house rather than a rate per room.
Inter-war rooms: picture rails, bays and decades of gloss

A 1930s house often keeps some original joinery inside: panelled doors, deep skirtings, picture rails and the window board in the bay. Most of it has been glossed many times, sometimes with oil paint sitting under later water-based coats. Before anything new goes on we test what is there, key it, and fill the runs and chips, because fresh paint over a flaking or incompatible layer simply lifts off again. Walls of this age are usually patched plaster, so fine cracks around door frames and along the ceiling line are expected. We rake them out and fill them rather than paint over and hope.
The picture rail gives you a useful choice. Taking the ceiling colour down to the rail makes a tall inter-war room feel cosier; carrying the wall colour up to the ceiling does the opposite. It costs nothing to decide before work starts, and it changes how many colours you need to buy.
Bigger houses on Harborough Road North need a phased plan
A detached house with a run of reception rooms, a long hall and a wide landing is a multi-day project, and a full interior can run to a couple of weeks. We plan it room by room so you always keep a working kitchen, a bathroom and somewhere to sit that is not under dust sheets. In each room the ceiling and walls normally go first and the woodwork last, so sanding dust from doors never settles on wet emulsion. If you live on Anchor Drive or another shared private drive, we agree where the van will park before the first morning so nobody is blocked in.
Whitehills is listed by Your Move as a high-demand family area, and in a busy family house the hall, stairs and landing take the most knocks. On those walls we usually suggest a scrubbable matt or a durable eggshell rather than a standard emulsion, so scuffs from school bags and bikes wipe off without leaving shiny patches.
Wardington Court: quiet work, ready for viewings

The retirement flats are smaller jobs with different priorities. Residents are often at home all day, so we use low-odour, water-based paints, keep to sensible working hours and clear up properly each evening. When a flat is being prepared for sale, one warm neutral across the walls with clean white ceilings and woodwork helps compact rooms read as larger in listing photos. Corridors and stairwells outside the flat are communal areas looked after by the managing agent, and we are happy to speak to them directly about that work.
If you have just moved into one of the new homes at Buckton Fields, just over the northern edge, that is a different job again: builder’s contract matt on new plaster needs a proper mist coat once the house has dried out, not a straight repaint.
Quotes from our Northampton base
White Hills sits in NN2 between the A508 and the A5199, about 2.8 miles north of the town centre, and is well within the area we cover. Dean walks through each room with you, notes the woodwork, plaster and ceilings, and puts the price in writing. For what affects the figure, see our painter and decorator cost guide. The full scope of the service is on our interior painting in Northampton page, and other work we do locally is listed on the White Hills area page.
