DH Painter & Decorator paints metal gates and railings in Grange Park, NN4, about 3.4 miles south of Northampton town centre. There is less ironwork here than in Northampton's Victorian streets, but where a home or business has steel gates or railings, Dean identifies the metal and treats any rust before repainting.
How much metalwork Grange Park actually has
It is worth being straight about this. Grange Park is a planned village built from the late 1990s onward, planned around a green and a local centre rather than along the railed front gardens of inner Northampton. Metal gates and railings are the exception here, and far less common than in the town’s Victorian districts.
Where they do turn up, it is usually in a few places: a fabricated gate across a driveway or side passage, a short run of railings at the front of an individual house, or the handrails and railings around community and commercial buildings. Because there is less of it, metalwork here is often painted as part of a wider exterior job rather than booked on its own.
Modern steel needs the right primer

On older streets the metal is often wrought or cast iron. On a modern estate it is far more likely to be steel, and that is where getting the primer right matters. Two types turn up most:
| Metal | How to spot it | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Galvanised steel | Dull grey zinc surface, sometimes with a crystalline pattern | A primer made for galvanised surfaces, as ordinary paint will not stick to the zinc |
| Mild steel, painted or powder-coated | Smooth coloured coating, with rust spots where it is chipped | Rust taken back to sound metal, a metal primer on bare spots, then top coats |
Galvanised gates are the ones most often painted badly. Paint brushed straight onto the zinc peels away in sheets within a year or two. If a previous coat has done exactly that, the loose material has to come off before the right primer goes on. The fuller explanation of metals, rust treatment and finishes is on our main metal gate and railing painting page.
Railings on shared and business premises
Grange Park has a cluster of non-residential buildings: the community centre on School Lane, the medical and dental practices and day nursery on Wilks Walk, and the hotels, Harvester and pub near Saxon Avenue, Cheaney Drive and Baines Way. Railings, handrails and gates around premises like these are used by the public all day, so work is planned to keep entrances usable, with sections painted in turn and clearly signed while wet.
Sites near the M1 and the A45 also collect road grime on their metalwork, which is washed off first. Paint laid over a dirty film on steel tends to lift, and once it lifts, rust follows.
Hinges, latches and the bottom rails of gates are checked as part of the preparation. These are the parts that trap water and wear through first on a steel gate, and a seized hinge or a latch that grinds against fresh paint will undo the job within weeks. They are cleaned, freed and touched in with primer before the top coats go on, and moving parts are kept clear of paint so the gate still swings and shuts properly.
Pairing metalwork with the rest of the outside

With no conservation area in Grange Park, there are no heritage colour rules on gates and railings, so black is a habit rather than a requirement. Some owners match a gate to the front door or to the window frames. Where a home here has a steel gate, it usually sits alongside timber fencing and painted trims, so doing it alongside other outside work is usually the most sensible way to book it.
Grange Park is within our coverage from Northampton. If your gate is timber rather than metal, our fence and gate staining service is the better fit.
