DH Painter & Decorator takes on commercial painting for businesses and organisations in and around Lings, about 3.3 miles north-east of Northampton town centre. The housing courts are residential, so commercial work here centres on the shopping centre units, leisure and education buildings, and offices next to the neighbourhood.
The commercial buildings around the Lings courts
The courts and closes of Lings are almost entirely homes, and no published source lists a shopping parade inside them. The commercial and public buildings sit on the edge of the neighbourhood, and they are large ones. Weston Favell Shopping Centre, opened in 1974, has 68 units over two levels and about 330,000 square feet of space, anchored by Tesco Extra, with a small retail park behind it. Lings Forum leisure centre is annexed to the centre and houses a gym, a swimming pool, a sports arena and the one-screen Forum Cinema. Northampton Academy is on Wellingborough Road, and the Wildlife Trust’s Northamptonshire office is at Lings House, inside the Lings Wood reserve.
That mix produces very different painting briefs within a short distance of each other.
Shop units in a two-level centre

For a tenant fitting out or refreshing a unit, the work is usually internal walls, ceilings, back-of-house areas and any timber or metal shop fittings. The constraint is the centre itself: tenants normally work within the landlord’s rules on contractor access, deliveries, dust and odour, with trading neighbours on both sides. We use low-odour water-based paints in units that share air with the mall, keep dust down with extracted sanders, and agree working times with the tenant and centre management before starting. Walls in sales areas need a finish that wipes clean, because shoulders, trolleys and stock cages rub against them every day.
Leisure, school and office spaces
Public buildings with heavy footfall need a tougher specification than a house. Corridors and changing areas in a leisure building take knocks from bags and equipment, and spaces near a pool deal with constant humidity, which calls for moisture-tolerant coatings and careful preparation rather than standard emulsion; where a pool hall needs a specialist system, we will say so plainly. School corridors and stairwells need scrubbable, low-VOC paint, and larger areas usually have to fit around the timetable or the holidays. We phase this kind of work so some areas stay open while others are sectioned off and signed.
A cinema screen room brings its own requirements. Auditorium walls are normally kept in dark, low-sheen colours so they do not reflect light from the screen, and any repainting there has to be fitted around the screening programme. Sports halls are another variation, where line markings, wall padding and high ceilings all shape how a repaint is sequenced and what access equipment is needed.
Lings House is a different case again. An office inside a nature reserve calls for careful waste handling: brushes and rollers are washed out into containers and taken away, never rinsed onto the ground. The reserve has no visitor parking, so access and loading would be agreed with the office in advance from Lings Way.
How we plan a commercial job here

- A site visit to see how people move through the space, whether that is mall traffic past a unit, gym and pool users at Lings Forum or pupils at the academy, plus any landlord or facilities rules.
- A written method for Weston Favell centre management or the building’s facilities staff, covering areas, sequence, products and how each zone is kept safe and usable.
- Coatings chosen for the building: scrubbable emulsion in mall units and school corridors, moisture-tolerant systems near the pool, and suitable primers on metal door frames and handrails.
- Shared walkways in the centre and the leisure building left clear for staff and the public at the end of each session.
DH Painter & Decorator is fully insured, and we can supply documents to centre management or facilities staff on request. Dean has over 30 years in the trade. Read more on our commercial painting page, or see the Lings area page for the residential side of the neighbourhood.
