DH Painter & Decorator repaints metal garage doors and gates in Lings, NN3, about 3.3 miles north-east of Northampton town centre. Here the work is mostly up-and-over garage doors and side gates rather than ornate railings, and each one starts with identifying the metal and treating the rust.
The metalwork on a typical Lings house
Lings is a late-20th-century estate, so it lacks the Victorian cast-iron railings found in older parts of Northampton. The metal that needs painting here is more practical. Several homes in the neighbourhood are listed with single or tandem garages, and up-and-over doors on garages of that type are often steel. Add any steel side gates, and that is the bulk of the metalwork on a typical court house.
A garage door is a large, flat sheet of metal that faces the court or the driveway, so when it starts to rust or fade, it shows. It is also one of the simplest visual fixes on the front of an estate house, since repainting it changes the look of the frontage without touching the brickwork. Where garage doors sit side by side, a freshly painted door is seen right beside the neighbours’ doors. If yours is the odd one out in colour, that is fine, but we are happy to match an existing shade if you would prefer the row to stay uniform.
Factory-coated, galvanised or bare steel?

Each needs a different approach, so we work out what the door or gate is made of first.
- Factory-coated steel doors often still have a sound original coating with rust only at the bottom rail, the corners and around the handle. We key the old finish, treat the rust spots back to bright metal, prime them and then paint the whole door.
- Galvanised steel gates need a primer made for zinc, because ordinary paint peels off a galvanised surface within months.
- Mild steel with the coating broken rusts fast. We scrape, wire brush and use a rust treatment where pitting is too deep to clean out, followed by a metal primer.
- Timber up-and-over doors appear on some houses too, and those are treated as joinery with a wood primer and exterior gloss or satin.
Damp, shade and the bottom rail
Rust on a garage door almost always starts where water sits: the bottom edge, the lower panel joints and behind the frame. On Lings homes near the nature reserve, shade from the wood and the damp air from its ponds keep those areas wet for longer, so corrosion tends to advance faster there than on a door in full sun. We check the bottom rail closely, and if it has rusted through we will tell you whether repainting still makes sense or whether the door needs a repair first.
Painting a door you use every day

A garage is usually in use, for a car or for storage. We agree with you when the door can stay open or shut while each coat dries, because an up-and-over door that is operated too soon will mark at the hinges and seals. Many houses have off-road parking, so our van can usually sit on the drive, and we keep the court clear for your neighbours. Springs and runners are protected and left free to move.
Side gates get the same order of work at a smaller scale. Hinges, latches and bolts are cleaned and greased after the paint has hardened rather than painted shut, and any gate that drags on the ground is worth adjusting first, since a gate scraping the path will strip new paint from its bottom edge within weeks.
See the main metal gate and railing painting service for how we prepare different metals, and the Lings area page for other local work. The painter and decorator cost guide explains what affects the price of a job like this.
