DH Painter & Decorator paints timber fascias, soffits, bargeboards and gutters in Lings, NN3, around 3.3 miles north-east of Northampton town centre. Many roofline jobs here begin with clearing tree debris and probing for rot, because the neighbourhood is built around a mature wood.
Needles, leaves and a blocked gutter
Lings Wood is largely planted with sweet chestnut, Douglas fir and larch. Every autumn the chestnuts drop broad leaves and spiny cases, and the larch, being a deciduous conifer, sheds its needles too. Houses within reach of the canopy get a steady supply of this in their gutters. Once a gutter outlet is choked, rainwater spills over the front edge or backs up behind the gutter and runs down the face of the fascia board.
That water is what rots a fascia. It usually starts at a board end, a joint or behind a gutter bracket, and the paint film can look intact while the wood behind it has gone soft. So on a Lings roofline the first visit is about clearing the gutters, looking along the boards from the ladder and testing the suspect spots with a sharp point, before any paint is discussed.
Is your roofline still timber?

Some estate houses in Lings have had their fascias and soffits replaced with uPVC, while others still carry the original painted timber. It is not always obvious from the ground. We check from the ladder and tell you honestly which parts are paintable timber, which are plastic that only needs a clean, and which timber is too far gone to save. Where a short length has rotted, a joiner can splice in new wood that we then prime and paint, and where most of a board has failed, replacement is the sensible route rather than more paint.
How we sequence a Lings roofline job
- Clear gutters and outlets, and note any joint that has been leaking.
- Probe board ends and corners for soft timber and mark any repairs.
- Scrape back loose paint, sand edges flush and treat any mould on the soffit underside, which stays shaded and damp on north-facing elevations.
- Knot, spot-prime bare timber and fill small defects.
- Undercoat and topcoat the boards, then paint gutters, downpipes and brackets if they are a paintable material.
On a terrace, the fascia often runs as one continuous line across several houses. If only your section is being done, we cut in neatly at the party line so the join looks deliberate, and we can talk to neighbours who might want theirs done in the same visit. On end-of-terrace houses the gable bargeboards are usually the most exposed timber on the building and deserve the closest look.
Larger detached homes on Lingswood Park, some of them extended, can have a second roofline over the extension that meets the original at a valley or a step. Those junctions trap leaves and are a common spot for paint to fail first, so we treat them as their own item on the quote.
Getting the timing right with the wood next door

Wet gloss and falling leaves do not mix. For houses closest to Lings Wood we aim to paint rooflines in late spring or summer, well before the main leaf and needle drop, and we clear the gutters on the day rather than weeks before. Access matters as well: ladders and stand-offs often have to be carried in from a driveway or the court entrance, and conservatory roofs, garage roofs and parked cars below the work area are protected before anything is scraped.
Our main fascia and soffit painting service describes the products and finishes in more detail. For other outside and inside work in the neighbourhood, see the Lings area page, and the exterior painting timing guide explains our seasonal planning.
