DH Painter & Decorator paints house exteriors across West Hunsbury, the NN4 estate wrapped around Hunsbury Hill Country Park on Northampton's south-west edge. Dean covers timber, doors, garage doors and painted walls on its 1970s to 2000s houses, and quotes after walking every elevation.
Four elevations, a garage and often a conservatory
West Hunsbury was built from 1970 onwards, with the bulk of the estate dating from the 1980s and 1990s as Northampton expanded south towards the M1. The result is an estate of detached and semi-detached family houses, many of them in cul-de-sacs, with a scattering of detached bungalows. Agent listings for streets such as Fienesgate, Aviemore Gardens and Summerfields keep describing the same extras: double garages, conservatories, extensions and, at Bramble End, a self-contained annex.
That shapes what an exterior repaint here actually involves. A detached house stands clear on all four sides, so there is no shared wall to shorten the job, and every gable, porch and garage door is exposed to the weather. Before quoting, Dean walks round the whole plot and lists each painted item:
- fascias, soffits and bargeboards on the house, garage and porch
- front, back and side doors, plus their frames
- garage doors, which on a double garage are a large flat area facing the street
- timber window joinery where it has not been replaced
- any painted wall surfaces, assessed one house at a time
The sources we hold do not record what the estate houses are built from, so we make no assumptions. If a wall has never been painted, we will usually advise leaving it alone. Our main exterior painting service explains preparation and products in detail.
Living next to 38 hectares of trees

Hunsbury Hill Country Park sits in the middle of the estate, and Ladybridge Park and Wootton Brook Park run along its southern side. Listings mention woodland plots, such as a bungalow on Tall Trees Close described as surrounded by woodland. All that greenery is pleasant to live beside, but it changes the paint job. Shaded and north-facing walls, fascias and garage doors grow green algae, and gutters fill with leaf litter that overflows down the timber below.
So most West Hunsbury exteriors start with a biocide wash. It is left to work and then brushed off before any sanding starts, because paint laid over live growth lifts within a season or two. We also clear gutters above any timber we are about to coat, since a blocked gutter will undo a fresh fascia faster than the weather will.
Elevations that face Towcester Road and the A43
The estate lies on the west side of Towcester Road, with M1 junction 15A roughly half a mile away. Houses whose front or side elevations face those main roads collect a grey traffic film on doors, sills and garage doors. That film stops new paint from bonding properly. Those surfaces get a degreasing wash before they are keyed and painted, and we note on the quote which elevations need it so the extra time is clear from the start.
Cul-de-sacs, drives and timing

Cul-de-sacs such as Hawkridge, Whaddon Close and Bramble End leave little room for a van to turn, but traffic in them is light. Most detached houses have a driveway and garage, so ladders, a tower and the van can usually stay on your own plot rather than on the pavement. Where a conservatory roof sits below the eaves, we board or sheet it before scraping starts.
Because so much of the work here is timber, we book exteriors for the drier months and watch the forecast closely. Our seasonal guide to exterior painting covers which months suit timber. For the wider picture of decorating across the estate, see our West Hunsbury area page. From our Northampton base the estate is about 2.1 miles away and quick to reach via the A43.
