DH Painter & Decorator repaints metal gates and railings in West Hunsbury, NN4, on the south-west side of Northampton by the A43. The estate has less ironwork than an older town street, so most jobs are a single wrought-iron side gate or railings at a shared building, which Dean prices on their own.
Where metalwork turns up on a 1970s to 2000s estate
West Hunsbury is not a place of Victorian front railings. Its houses were built from 1970 onwards, mostly in the 1980s and 1990s, with driveways, garages and timber fencing. That means metal gates and railings are fairly scarce here, and they tend to be found in a few specific places:
- wrought-iron side gates between a detached house and its garage
- railings and gates at the edges of Hunsbury Hill Country Park, Ladybridge Park and Wootton Brook Park
- metalwork around the shop parade on Hunsbury Hill Road
- fencing and gates at community buildings such as Parsons Meade Community Centre and Hunsbury Park Primary School
For homeowners, the job is usually one side gate that has started to rust at the hinges and the bottom bar. We are happy to take on a single gate without bundling it into a bigger job. If the gate is heavy and sagging, the hinges and latch are worth checking before painting, because a gate that drags on the path will chip its new finish within weeks. We will point that out at the quote rather than paint over it.
Why ironwork here rusts from the bottom up

The estate sits around a large wooded country park, with two more parks along Wootton Brook. Gates in shaded side passages and railings near the parks stay damp long after rain, and leaves pile up against their lower rails. That is where rust starts: on the bottom bar, at the hinge pins and wherever a joint holds water. Low ground near the brook makes it worse.
So the preparation concentrates on those weak points. Loose rust and failed paint are wire-brushed or abraded back to a firm surface, bare steel is spot-primed with a rust-inhibiting primer the same day, and joints are worked into properly rather than painted over. Our main metal gate and railing painting service covers primers and topcoats in more detail.
Working beside schools, sheltered housing and the parade
Railings at shared buildings bring different considerations from a garden gate. Railings at the Parsons Meade sheltered homes belong to Northampton Partnership Homes, so a job there would come through that landlord. It would also need low-odour products and walkways kept clear for residents who may use frames or wheelchairs. At a primary school, the work has to fit around the school day or the holidays, with wet paint fenced off from children. At the parade on Hunsbury Hill Road, which serves both West Hunsbury and Camp Hill, painting would be timed for quieter trading hours, with signs on every wet rail.
In each case, we agree the hours, the products and how the area will be kept safe before we start. We do not simply turn up and fit the job round the public.
Choosing a finish that suits the setting

Black gloss is the traditional finish, but it is not the only option. Satin or semi-gloss black hides small surface flaws better on an older gate, and a dark green can sit better against parkland. Whatever the colour, a proper metal paint system will outlast a single coat of general exterior gloss. If you are comparing quotes, our guide on how to choose a painter and decorator lists questions to ask about preparation. Find other work we do locally on our West Hunsbury area page.
