DH Painter & Decorator paints metal gates and railings in Camp Hill, NN4, about 1.8 miles south-west of Northampton town centre. The 1980s estate has few period railings, so most jobs are a single domestic gate or railings around community buildings and the local centre on Hunsbury Hill Road.
A small amount of metal, in particular places
Camp Hill is not an area of Victorian ironwork. It was built mostly in the 1980s on old ironstone quarry ground, and the estate has very few period railings. Metal turns up in a handful of places: the odd domestic side gate or garden gate, railings around community buildings such as Camp Hill Community Centre on Dayrell Road and the primary school, and metalwork near the local centre on Hunsbury Hill Road.
Because the amount is small, each job tends to be one item, and we are glad to quote for a single gate on its own. How we identify the metal and choose primers and coatings is covered on our main metal gate and railing painting page.
Modern steel, not old wrought iron

On an estate of this age, gates and railings are far more likely to be mild steel or galvanised steel than wrought or cast iron. The two need different treatment, and getting it wrong is the usual reason paint flakes off modern metalwork:
| Metal | Typical sign | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Mild steel | Orange rust where the coating has chipped | Wire brush back to sound metal, rust-inhibiting primer on bare spots the same day |
| Galvanised steel | Dull grey zinc surface, paint peeling in sheets | Degrease, abrade lightly, then a primer made for galvanised surfaces |
We check which you have at the quote, sometimes with a scrape on a hidden edge, before deciding the system. A gate that drags on the path or has a seized hinge will chip its new paint within weeks, so if the fixings need attention we say so rather than paint over the problem. Hinges and latches are freed and greased once the top coat has hardened.
Grime from the ring road and shade from the park
Danes Camp Way runs along the northern edge of Camp Hill, and metalwork near it collects the same traffic film that dulls render and fascias. On metal it is a grease layer that primer will not key into, so it has to be washed off before any rust treatment begins. On the other side of the estate, gates in gardens close to the wooded country park stay damp in the shade and gather leaf debris at their hinges and catches. Those are the spots we work into most carefully.
Does the old ironstone ground under the estate affect metalwork? Nothing in the records points to that. What decides how long a finish lasts here is far more ordinary: whether the metal was primed properly, whether water can drain off the bottom rail, and how much shade and grime the gate sits in.
Railings at community buildings and the local centre

Metalwork at shared buildings brings its own planning. Camp Hill Community Centre on Dayrell Road is a registered charity, St Benedict’s Church sits on Hunsbury Hill Road beside the pre-school, and Hunsbury Park Primary School is on Dayrell Road. For any of these, we would agree with the people responsible:
- days and times when the railings can be painted without blocking entrances
- how wet sections will be marked and fenced off, especially near children
- where equipment is stored during the day, away from public paths
At the local centre the railings sit on the same site as the health centre and surgery, so wheelchair and pushchair routes have to stay open the whole time. Visit our Camp Hill area page for other local work, or read our guide to choosing a painter and decorator before you compare quotes.
