DH Painter & Decorator paints metal gates, railings, barriers and steel doors around Pineham, NN4, from the Prologis Park yards to the village school. On this modern estate, most metalwork is at the distribution park and around public buildings rather than on houses.
Where the metal actually is in Pineham
Pineham is not a place of Victorian iron railings and front-garden gates. The housing is a 21st-century Taylor Wimpey estate with timber fences and uPVC windows, so domestic metalwork is limited. The steelwork that does need painting is mostly found in three places:
- Prologis Park Pineham, next to M1 junction 15A, where large distribution buildings have steel personnel doors, crash barriers, bollards and yard gates.
- Education sites such as the Pineham Barns academy, where any boundary railings and gates take daily wear.
- Individual homes where an owner has added a metal side gate, a balustrade or a railing to a step.
Each of these needs a different approach. For the general process of rust treatment and priming, see our main metal gate and railing painting page.
Barriers, bollards and steel doors at the distribution park

Sainsbury’s alone runs two large buildings on the park, and yards like these see a steady stream of lorries. Bollards and barriers get clipped by vehicles, which chips the coating and exposes bare steel, and personnel doors take knocks from trolleys and cages.
Painting on a working logistics site has to fit around the site. That means a site induction, agreed working zones, coned-off areas and work timed for quieter windows in operations that may run around the clock. Safety yellow on barriers and bollards should stay clearly visible, so we match the existing shade and use a hard-wearing system that stands up to impact. For wider work on warehouse offices and welfare areas, see our commercial painting service.
Railings and gates around school sessions
The Dragonfly Way academy has places for 420 children, and the day nursery at the neighbourhood centre also has young children arriving and leaving every day. Any painting of gates or railings at sites like these should be planned for school holidays or times when the site is closed, so wet paint and equipment never sit near children. We use low-odour products where they suit the job, and we keep the area taped off until the coating has hardened.
School and nursery sites usually have their own facilities or estates contact, and a short written method statement helps them sign the job off. Dean can provide one setting out the dates, the products and how the area will be kept apart from pupils, parents and staff.
Galvanised steel and modern coatings

Much modern fabricated metalwork, on commercial sites and newer homes alike, is galvanised or powder-coated at the factory. Neither takes ordinary metal paint well. Galvanised steel needs degreasing and a primer made for zinc surfaces, or the paint peels off in sheets. Powder coating needs keying with abrasive and a suitable adhesion primer. On a younger estate like Pineham, identifying the existing coating is usually more important than tackling deep rust.
Where rust has got in, at chipped bollards, gate hinges or the foot of a post that stands in damp ground near Wootton Brook, we wire-brush back to sound metal and apply a rust-inhibiting primer before any top coat. Heavy HGV traffic on the approach roads to the junction also leaves a greasy road film on roadside metalwork, so every surface is washed and degreased before priming, whatever it is made of. For more on what we do in the area, see our Pineham area page.
