DH Painter & Decorator paints interiors in Camp Hill (NN4 9), the 1980s estate on the north-eastern slopes of Hunsbury Hill, about 1.8 miles south-west of Northampton town centre. Dean handles walls, ceilings and woodwork, and because the houses are compact a full repaint is usually one planned visit.
Two-bed semis on Harksome Hill: one visit, one scheme
Property records date the semis on Harksome Hill to between 1983 and 1990, and the ones on record are two-bedroom homes of around 721 square feet. Add up every wall and ceiling in a house that size and the total is modest, so a full interior repaint takes days, not weeks. That changes how we would suggest planning it. Rather than a bedroom this spring and the landing next year, it usually makes more sense to work through the whole house in one go. The ceiling white, the woodwork sheen and the wall colours then come from the same batches and read as one scheme as you move from the front door to the back bedroom.
Forty-odd years on, the original joinery needs as much attention as the walls. Softwood skirtings, architraves and door linings from the 1980s usually carry several layers of old gloss, chips at kick height and hairline gaps where the timber meets the plaster. We fill, sand and key those before a fresh satin or eggshell goes on, because a new top coat over a chipped edge only shows the chip more clearly.
Artex, re-skims and the ceilings of the estate

Textured artex was still a common ceiling finish when this estate was going up. In a Camp Hill house you are likely to meet one of two situations:
- Artex still in place and sound. It can be painted, but the texture drinks paint and throws a ragged line at the wall, so cutting in takes longer than on a flat ceiling.
- Artex skimmed over by a previous owner. Fresh plaster needs a thinned mist coat to bond before full-strength emulsion, and it has to be properly dry first.
Dean looks at each ceiling when he quotes and tells you which you have, because it affects the time and the materials more than room size does.
Light on the side of the hill
Camp Hill sits on the north-eastern slopes of Hunsbury Hill, so a good share of rooms look north or east and only catch the early sun. In a small room with a single window, the choice between a cold brilliant white and a softer warm white makes more difference than an extra coat ever will. We paint sample patches on the actual walls and suggest you look at them at the time of day you use the room most. Kitchens and bathrooms on the shaded side also tend to gather condensation in winter, so they get a steam-tolerant emulsion and any mould spotting is killed with a fungicidal wash before anything is painted. For a longer conversation about shade and colour, see our Camp Hill colour advice page.
Courts, living streets and leasehold flats

The terraces grouped in Squares off Dayrell Road, such as Haselrig, Farraxton and Higgins Squares, open onto shared courts, and roads like Summerfields, Merry Hill and Cullahill Court are laid out as living streets with shared surfaces. For indoor work that mostly means the van sits in the nearest parking area and dust sheets, steps and tins are carried in. It is worth telling us at the quote which parking area is closest to your door. Arriving before the Danes Camp Way roundabout builds its peak-time queue also helps an early start.
If you own a leasehold flat, such as those in Benjamin Square, decorating inside your own flat is normally your call, but shared hallways and stairs usually belong to the freeholder or management company and need their agreement first. Residents of Parsons Meade, the 1988 retirement bungalows run by Northampton Partnership Homes, would normally go through NPH, and paint choice there leans to low-odour products.
How a Camp Hill quote works
Dean comes to look at the rooms, checks the ceilings and woodwork, and gives you a written quote that lists what will be done in each room. We do not publish prices for a whole house because the state of the joinery and ceilings varies so much, but our painter and decorator cost guide explains what drives the figure. The full process, from protection to final coat, is on our main interior painting service page, and the wider area is covered on the Camp Hill area page.
