DH Painter & Decorator paints interiors across Briar Hill (NN4), the estate about 1.3 miles south-west of Northampton town centre. Dean covers walls, ceilings and woodwork in the terraces and bungalows built here from 1969 onwards, planning each job around modest room sizes, low light on the north-facing slope and shared parking courts.
What a Briar Hill estate house asks of a repaint
Briar Hill was built on the fields of the old Briar Hill Farm, with construction under way by 1969 and carrying on through the 1970s as the Northampton Development Corporation expanded the town. Most homes here are two-storey estate terraces of that period, plus the sheltered flats and bungalows at Southwood Hill from 1971 and the Blackberry Lane bungalows from 1987. That gives the area a fairly consistent interior: plaster and plasterboard walls, softwood skirtings and doors, and rooms that are modest in size.
Modest rooms work in your favour. A three-bed terrace can usually be repainted top to bottom in a planned run of days rather than weeks, and it is often sensible to do the whole house at once so the colours and sheen match from room to room. The prep is less about rescuing crumbling plaster, as it would be in a Victorian terrace, and more about fifty years of household life: picture hooks, filled-in shelf brackets, artex patches on some ceilings, and old gloss on skirtings that needs keying before anything water-based will stick to it.
Rooms on the cool side of the valley

The estate sits on the north-facing slope of the Nene Valley, at roughly 80 metres, with the river about 700 metres to the north. Rooms on the shaded side of a house here get little direct sun. Two things follow from that indoors:
- Bathrooms, kitchens and back bedrooms on north elevations are prone to condensation, and black mould spotting appears around window reveals and in ceiling corners. We treat it with a fungicidal wash and let the surface dry before painting, then use a moisture-resistant emulsion where it is needed.
- Paint dries more slowly in cool rooms, so we allow longer between coats in winter rather than rushing a second coat onto a soft first one.
Colour choice is affected too, and Dean can talk that through as part of the quote; there is more on it on our Briar Hill colour advice page.
Retirement bungalows at Southwood Hill and Blackberry Lane
The 37 sheltered homes at Southwood Hill and the 49 two-bedroom bungalows on Blackberry Lane are social-rented retirement housing managed by Northampton Partnership Homes. Decorating in those homes normally has to be agreed with the housing provider first, so check your tenancy before booking anything. Where work does go ahead, some of the Blackberry Lane bungalows were built to mobility and wheelchair standard, which changes how we work: furniture is moved so a clear route stays open through every room, dust sheets are taped flat so nothing catches a wheel or walking frame, and we use low-odour, quick-drying water-based paints so a room is usable again the same day.
Getting kit from the parking court to the room

Many terraces, Southwood Hill among them, have a communal parking area rather than a drive, and some front doors face footpaths rather than the road, part of the estate’s separated footpath network that also runs through the Hunsbarrow Road underpass. We carry dust sheets, steps and paint in by hand and keep the shared path clear while we do. On a whole-house job, it helps if you can let us know which bay we can use so neighbours are not blocked in.
Briar Hill also has privately let terraces alongside its housing association homes. For a landlord, an interior refresh between tenants is usually a fast, hard-wearing neutral throughout, and we plan the order of rooms so the house can be shown to new tenants as soon as possible.
