DH Painter & Decorator covers Ecton Brook from our Northampton base, about 4.1 miles east of the town centre in NN3 5. Dean, with over 30 years in the trade, decorates the estate's 1970s-80s terraces, detached homes, rented properties and newer infill houses, inside and out.
An estate built in one go
Ecton Brook is a planned housing estate on Northampton’s eastern edge, and one of the four estates and wards of Billing civil parish, with Great Billing, Little Billing and Bellinge. Great Billing and Little Billing grew around old villages. Ecton Brook did not. The Northampton Development Corporation built it from scratch between the late 1970s and the 1980s, as a new-town estate for people moving out of London and elsewhere. A 1979 photograph of phase one, credited to the Development Corporation, is held by the RIBA. Great Billing Way runs along its western side, separating it from the old Great Billing village and its conservation area. The A45 Nene Valley Way runs to the south, and a linear park follows the brook that gives the estate its name.
For a decorator, that history matters more than any single street. Almost everything was built within a few years, to a consistent plan, using modern construction rather than the stone of the old Billing villages. Most homes are now 40 to 50 years old, at the age when original timber, tired plaster and layers of DIY paint all need attention around the same time.
The terraces in the squares

Terraced and end-of-terrace houses are the most common homes, set around pedestrian squares and closes off Ecton Brook Road and Mushroom Field Road: Foxendale Square, Foxwell Square, Snowbell Square, Windflower Place, Chedworth Close, Normead Square, Lockcroft Square and Horsemoor Square among them. Some flats and maisonettes are mixed in.
Inside, rooms are compact with standard-height ceilings, so a full interior repaint is often a single booking. The hall is the part that wears fastest. With the staircase starting just inside the front door, the narrow walls and spindles beside them get scuffed every day, and a hard-wearing finish there makes the biggest difference. Our hallway and stairs decorating covers that in detail.
Outside, the layout shapes the job more than the building does. Many front doors look onto a green or footpath rather than a street. Ladders, sheets and paint have to be carried from shared parking, where there may be little room for a van, and any steps or towers standing on a shared path must leave room for people walking past. We plan days to limit trips and sheet paths so they stay safe to use. Because terraces in a square face each other, front doors and woodwork are seen together as a group, which is worth thinking about when you choose a colour.
Detached and link-detached roads
Riverwell, Parkside, Raisins Field Close, Sheerwater Drive, Lakeside Drive, Ecton Park Road and Newstead Close have detached homes and link-detached ones, with semi-detached homes on some larger plots. Access is simpler, with driveways and single garages. There is also more to paint outside: garage doors, gates, longer fence runs and wider rooflines. Inside, bigger lounges and dining rooms leave space for wallpaper or decorative work that would crowd a small terrace.
Outside work: the brook, the trees and the A45
Exterior conditions vary across the estate more than the housing does.
- Along Ecton Brook Linear Park. Homes backing onto the brook corridor and the Ridgewalk and Three Mile Walk paths have trees, shade and damp margins. Fences and north-facing walls there pick up green algae and need a biocide wash before any stain or paint. See our fence and gate staining service.
- Near the A45 and Great Billing Interchange. Frontages and fencing closest to the dual carriageway collect traffic film, which has to be washed off or new coats won’t bond properly.
- Rooflines. Fascias, soffits and bargeboards on the estate may still be the original painted timber. We check for rot and old overpainting before quoting. Our fascia and soffit painting page explains the repair and prep.
- Walls. Exterior walls are mostly modern brick, with some render or panels. Each surface is checked for existing coatings before a masonry paint is chosen.
There is no conservation area or listed building on the estate, so exterior colours are your own choice, unlike the old village west of Great Billing Way. For timing outside work, see when to paint outside in the UK.
Lets, shared houses and housing-provider homes

Ecton Brook began as public housing and has a mix of tenures today: private lets, HMO room lets, shared ownership and social-rent homes. The rental market is modest, with terraced houses, flats on Merrydale Square, maisonettes and furnished rooms in shared houses. For landlords and housing providers the work is mostly quick, neutral repaints between tenancies in wipeable emulsions, and tough finishes in shared halls and kitchens. Billing parish falls inside the former Northampton borough, where Article 4 directions remove the automatic right to turn a family house into a small HMO, so shared houses here are regulated properties. Our landlord and letting agent decorating page covers turnarounds.
Newer homes and fresh plaster
New housing is still being added. Planning permission N/2015/1249 allowed homes on the old Ecton Brook Playing Fields beside Great Billing Way, and in September 2025 the council approved 18 affordable homes on the cleared former care home site, due to be finished in spring 2027. New houses, and extensions to the detached homes, bring bare plaster, which needs a mist coat before colour, and a first redecoration once settling cracks have shown. See our new plaster and extension painting service.
The local centre and schools
Commercial work on the estate is limited and small. The local centre on Ecton Brook Road has a convenience store, post office, takeaway, pharmacy and the Brook Medical Centre, and Ecton Brook Primary School and St Andrew’s CE Primary School are on the same road. Shopfronts there get daily wear, and any work is timed around trading or school hours. Brook Medical Centre has its own car park, which makes access simpler than in the residential squares, though work still has to keep entrances clear for patients. Bigger retail sits outside the estate, at Weston Favell Centre, and we cover premises there too through our commercial painting service.
Dean is fully insured, and every job starts with a free quote after a look at the property. Read our cost guide for what affects the price, or our main interior painting and exterior painting pages for how we work.
