Dean repaints metal garden gates, handrails and railings for homes and premises in Ecton Brook, the NN3 5 estate around 4.1 miles east of Northampton town centre. Most metalwork here is small, so it is often done alongside other outside painting in the same visit.
Small metalwork on a modern estate
Ecton Brook does not have the long runs of Victorian cast-iron railings found in older parts of Northampton. It was built in the 1970s and 1980s, and the metalwork on it is modest: garden gates, handrails beside steps and paths, and some railings around the squares and the local centre on Ecton Brook Road. Expect most of it to be mild steel, with some galvanised, though we check each piece.
These are small jobs, typically a rust treatment and a recoat. A garden gate in one of the squares, for instance, may only need its hinges, latch and bottom rail taken back, primed and then the whole gate given two finishing coats so the repairs do not show as patches. That makes them easy to overlook until the rust is obvious, but a gate or handrail that is caught early only needs spot treatment, while one left for years can be pitted and seized at the hinges.
Mild steel or galvanised: why we check first

Getting the metal right decides whether the paint lasts. On this estate the two we would expect most often behave very differently:
- Mild steel rusts quickly wherever the coating is chipped, usually at the hinges, the latch and the bottom rail where water sits. We wire-brush or abrade back to sound metal, treat any remaining rust, and prime bare areas with a rust-inhibiting primer before the top coat.
- Galvanised steel has a zinc coating that standard metal paint does not grip. If it has never been painted, it needs degreasing and a primer made for galvanised surfaces. If it was painted before and is now peeling in sheets, that is usually the reason.
We identify which you have before quoting. The wider process, including the other metals you might meet on older houses, is on our main metal gate and railing painting page.
Handrails people hold every day
A handrail beside a front step is touched every time someone comes home, so the finish needs to cope with hands, rings, keys and the odd bike pedal. A hard-wearing exterior metal paint helps, but so does timing. We plan handrail work so the rail has time to dry before it is needed, and we leave clear wet paint signs. On a shared path, where a rail serves more than one house, we let neighbours know when it will be out of use.
Metalwork nearest the A45 Nene Valley Way and the Great Billing Interchange also collects traffic grime, which needs washing off and drying before primer will bond. Gates by the tree-lined edges of Ecton Brook Linear Park stay damp longer, which tends to show as rust starting along the lower rail first.
Adding it to a bigger outside job

Because a single gate or rail is a short piece of work, and many homes in the squares are reached on foot from shared parking, it often makes sense to combine it with something else outside: a front door, fascias or a fence. One carry-in of kit covers the lot, and the colours can be chosen together. Railings and handrails at business premises on the Ecton Brook Road parade can be fitted around trading hours in the same way as shopfront work.
If you are pricing several outside jobs together, our cost guide explains what affects the figure, and our Ecton Brook page lists the other services we cover on the estate.
