Dean paints metal garden gates, handrails and railings in Bellinge, NN3 9, on the eastern side of Northampton about 3.5 miles from the town centre. Metalwork here is mostly modest estate fittings, not ornate period ironwork, so the work is usually rust treatment and a fresh protective coat.
Small metalwork, everyday wear
Bellinge has no Victorian villas with cast iron front railings. It went up in the 1970s and 1980s as a Northampton Development Corporation estate, and the metal on the estate reflects that. You are more likely to find a steel garden gate, a handrail beside a few steps, a short run of railing at the edge of a front garden, or a metal side gate on an end-of-terrace house. The jobs are small, but they matter, because a rail with flaking paint and rust is unpleasant to hold and gets worse each winter.
Most of this metalwork has been on the estate for decades and has been painted, missed and repainted by different owners. That leaves a mix of sound paint, bare patches and rust under a skin of gloss, sometimes on the same gate.
Working out what the gate is made of

Estate metalwork of this age is most often mild steel, with some galvanised items fitted later. The distinction matters:
- Mild steel rusts quickly wherever the coating is chipped. It needs loose rust taken back by wire brush, a rust treatment where pitting is deep, then a metal primer and top coats.
- Galvanised steel has a zinc layer that ordinary paint will not grip. New or unpainted galvanised work needs a primer made for it, or the paint peels off in sheets.
- Previously painted metal of either kind is checked for how well the old coats are holding. Firm paint can be keyed and recoated. Lifting paint comes off first.
If you are not sure, Dean can tell on site with a scrape test in an unseen corner.
Handrails people hold every day
On an estate laid out around footpaths, handrails beside steps and slopes get used constantly, by residents, visitors and anyone heading to Fieldmill Square or the school campus on Fieldmill Road. A rail cannot simply be fenced off for a week. We plan handrail work so that each coat has a full drying day where possible, put up wet paint signs at both ends, and tell you in advance which days the rail should not be touched. On a rail used for safety, we may paint one section at a time so part of it stays usable.
Railings around Fieldmill Square, the community centre and the school are a matter for whoever manages those sites. We can quote for that kind of work too, through whoever manages the building.
Fitting metalwork into a visit

Gates and railings on the estate rarely need more than a day or two. Because parking is shared and kit is carried in from the court, many owners have metalwork done during the same visit as another outside job, such as a front door or fence, so the preparation and drying time overlap. A gate on its own is fine to book as well, and on a short job like this we can usually give you a clear start and finish day at the quote stage.
Homes near the A45 Nene Valley Way may find their gates carry a film of traffic dirt. That is washed off before any primer goes on. Shaded gates beside Great Billing Park can also hold damp longer, so we wait for a dry run of weather.
Our main metal gate and railing painting page describes the rust treatment and coating system in full. For more about the estate, see the Bellinge area page.
