DH Painter & Decorator paints metal gates, railings, handrails and garage doors in Rectory Farm, about 4.2 miles north-east of Northampton town centre. The estate has little decorative ironwork, so most jobs here are steel garage doors and functional railings, each treated for rust before painting.
Not a place of wrought-iron railings
If you search for railing painting you mostly find Victorian front railings and ornate gates. Rectory Farm was built between 1973 and 1992 to a New Town layout, and it has very little decorative ironwork. The metal that needs painting here is more practical: steel up-and-over garage doors in the 1980s closes, handrails where footpaths step up or down, a metal gate or low railing a previous owner fitted, and the fencing around school and community buildings.
That honesty matters for the quote. A garage door or a run of handrail is a different job from a Victorian gate, with flat panels and tubular steel instead of scrollwork, and the time and method reflect it.
Steel garage doors on the 1980s closes

Many of the detached houses from the estate’s second phase, such as Bentley Close, Healey Close and Allard Close, have garages, and where the door is the original steel up-and-over it is now more than thirty years old. Faded factory coatings, rust bubbling along the bottom edge and scratches around the handle are the usual signs. We take rust back to bright metal, apply a rust-inhibiting primer to bare patches, then finish in a durable exterior gloss or satin. If the door is galvanised, it needs a primer made for galvanised steel, because ordinary paint will not grip zinc.
A garage door is a large flat surface right at the front of the house, so finish quality shows. We brush and roll in the direction of the ribs and avoid days when wind would blow dust onto wet paint.
Handrails, steps and shared metalwork
The estate’s separate footpath network, laid out on Radburn lines to keep people away from cars, includes flights of steps where the ground changes level, and those usually carry a handrail. Railings and handrails on public paths, at the primary school or at the community centre are normally the responsibility of the council, school or building manager, not the householder. We can work for whoever owns them. On school and community sites, work is arranged outside school hours and around groups using the building, which is the only sensible time on Olden Road where the 20 mph stretch fills with drop-off traffic.
Metal fixed to a private home, such as a porch handrail or a short railing on a front wall, is yours to have painted. On a housing-association or shared-ownership home, check whether the landlord maintains it first.
Colour, timing and the gloss question

A garage door is usually painted to match or contrast with the front door and fascias, so it is worth deciding the colours for all three together, even if only the garage is done now. Gloss sheds water and dirt well but shows every dent in a ribbed steel door; satin hides minor dents better and still wipes clean. Metal paint also needs a dry surface above the dew point, so we start once any morning condensation has cleared from the door, which on a north-facing garage can be late morning.
What we check before quoting
- Whether the metal is mild steel, galvanised steel or aluminium, since each takes a different primer
- How deep the rust goes, and whether any section has thinned enough to need a welder first
- Whether moving parts such as garage door springs and hinges need protecting from paint
- Where any rail is fixed into concrete or brick, since rust swelling at the base can crack the fixing
The preparation and coating system is explained on our main metal gate and railing painting page. Garage doors are often done alongside fascias and porches as part of exterior painting, and our page for Rectory Farm sets out the other services available to homes here.
