We paint metalwork in Kings Heath, NN5, 1.7 miles north-west of Northampton town centre as the crow flies. Most of the estate's painted metal is on the industrial units off Heathfield Way, Kingsfield Close and Gladstone Road, plus around Park Square.
Doors, rails and trims on Kings Heath Industrial Estate
The industrial estate on the edge of Kings Heath, reached from Heathfield Way, Kingsfield Close and Gladstone Road, is where most of the area’s painted metal sits. Trade and workshop units like these carry steel doors, railings and the metal trims along cladding. Once the coating on a steel door or rail breaks, rust spreads under the paint and lifts it in sheets. A fresh coat of standard gloss over that only hides the problem for a season.
For a unit on the estate the sequence is:
- scrape off loose paint and wire brush back to sound metal, by hand and with rotary brushes;
- treat remaining rust with a converter or rust-inhibiting primer;
- use a primer made for galvanised steel on any zinc-coated rails or trims, since ordinary paint will not bond to them;
- finish in a durable metal paint suited to doors and rails that are handled every day.
The main metal gate and railing painting page explains how we deal with each type of metal.
Repainting between occupiers at Kings Heath Workshops

The council-let Kings Heath Workshops are compact, at 331 or 653 sq ft, and when one changes hands the gap between one occupier leaving and the next moving in is the obvious time to put the metalwork right: the entrance door, its frame, any handrail at the step and the trims at eye level. On units this size the metal and the interior walls can usually be done in the same short visit. Larger trade units follow the same approach, worked around deliveries and opening times; our commercial painting page covers that side.
Metalwork around Park Square
Park Square, the post-war shopping parade at the centre of the estate, is the other place on the estate where metal is common. Anything at hand height there gets handled and knocked, and graffiti has been a problem, which is why council graffiti funding followed the volunteers’ March 2026 repaint. On metal that gets tagged, a hard satin or gloss that can be cleaned without dulling is more practical than a soft finish, and a colour that is easy to buy again lets a damaged section be touched in without repainting the run.
Gates and handrails at home

The houses on the river-named streets are mostly terraces and semis, and not every one has metal at the front. Where a house does have a metal gate, a handrail by the step or railings to a path, the work is smaller but the method is the same: rust out first, then primer, then top coat. On terraces it often makes sense to do this alongside the front door and window woodwork, so the whole front is finished in one visit. Hinges and latches are freed and greased while the gate is off its catch, so it swings properly once the paint has hardened. Domestic metalwork on a seventy-year-old estate has usually been painted many times, sometimes straight over rust, so expect more scraping than the size of the gate suggests. Where a post has rusted through at ground level, a welder is the right first call before any paint goes on.
All of Kings Heath is within a short drive of our Northampton base. The Kings Heath area page lists everything else we cover on the estate.
