DH Painter & Decorator paints metal railings and gates in Spencer, NN5, about a mile north-west of the town centre between the A428 and A4500. Most of the metalwork here surrounds community buildings and flat blocks rather than period houses, so the work is maintenance repainting with proper rust treatment.
Where Spencer’s metalwork actually is
Spencer is not a district of Victorian cast-iron front railings. Its houses date mainly from the late 1930s onwards, and most of its painted metal belongs to shared and public buildings. The estate has two primary schools, Earl Spencer Primary on Streatfeild Road and St James Church of England Primary on Harlestone Road, plus Camrose Early Years Centre on Tenby Road. It also has several community buildings: the Spencer Dallington Community Centre on Tintern Avenue, the Gladstone Centre and Elim Christian Centre on Gladstone Road, and Cardigan Close Community Centre. Around these, and around the flat and maisonette blocks on Cardigan Close, Newport Road and Lyttleton Road, you find perimeter railings, vehicle gates, bin store enclosures and stair handrails.
On private homes the metal is smaller in scale: a front gate, a short run of railings by a path, a handrail beside the steps. These are repainted the same way, just in hours rather than days.
Maintenance painting rather than restoration

Metalwork of this kind is usually functional mild or galvanised steel, painted many times and now flaking at the welds, the feet and anywhere a bin or bike rubs. The aim is to stop the rust spreading and get a long life from the next coat. In practice that means:
- Scraping and wire brushing back to sound metal, with extra time on the base of each upright where water sits.
- Treating any pitted rust that cannot be removed, then priming bare spots with a metal primer.
- Using a primer made for galvanised steel where the zinc coating is exposed, as ordinary paint will not stick to it.
- Two finish coats, with the hinges, latches and gate tops given particular attention.
Our main metal gate and railing painting page goes into identifying the metal and choosing the system.
Working around a school or community building
Painting a railing outside a school or community centre is mostly a matter of planning. The work is noisy when wire brushing and the paint stays wet for hours, while children, parents, staff and visitors need the gates. So sections are painted in an order agreed with the site, with one entrance always kept open and every wet length signed and taped off. School holidays are the natural window for perimeter railings at Earl Spencer Primary or St James CE Primary, and community centres can often give a quieter weekday slot. Wire brushing and spray work are kept away from open windows. For wider work inside or outside these buildings, see our commercial painting service.
Shared blocks, main roads and the higher ground

Railings and stair rails at the Cardigan Close, Newport Road and Lyttleton Road blocks usually belong to a housing provider or are handled by a managing agent, and the same goes for the Countess Road flats. Any quote is arranged through them, with notices for residents before shared stairs or gates are painted.
Metal fronting Spencer Bridge Road or Harlestone Road carries a greasy exhaust deposit that has to be removed before primer goes on. Railings on the higher ground near the top of Gladstone Road see more wind-driven rain, so rust at the joints there tends to be further on and takes more preparation. Dean will look at the metal, tell you what it needs and give a free written quote. Other local services are on our Spencer area page.
