Dean paints metal gates and railings in Moulton Leys, the NN3 estate about 3.3 miles north-east of Northampton town centre. On the houses it is mostly side gates; the larger runs of railing belong to the estate's school, nursery, care home and education centre.
A small amount of metal on the houses
There is not a great deal of ironwork on the Moulton Leys houses. Metalwork on the homes is limited, and the garden boundaries on the closes are generally shared timber fences rather than railings. What we do find on houses is the odd metal side gate between a garage and the house wall, a garden gate on a corner plot, or a handrail by a step. Hinges and latches on gates like these often seize first, long before the bars rust through. These are small jobs, and we are happy to do one on its own or fold it into a visit for other outside painting on the estate.
Modern side gates are commonly mild steel or galvanised steel, and the two need different primers. Galvanised zinc will shed ordinary paint unless it gets a primer made for it, so Dean checks what the gate is made of before deciding on products.
Boundary metalwork on the school, nursery and care home sites

The longer runs of boundary metalwork are on the estate’s non-residential sites: Kings Meadow School off Manning Road, the Child First Nursery in the Moulton Way area, Leys Residential Home, and On Track Education on Quarry Park Close. Painting railings at sites like these is a different exercise from a garden gate:
| Site type | What shapes the job |
|---|---|
| School | Railings by entrances suit holiday working; drop-off and pick-up times limit access on Manning Road |
| Nursery | Children close by, so low-odour paint, fenced-off wet sections and no rust dust near play areas |
| Care home | Residents may sit near windows or walk the grounds; work phased in short lengths with clear signage |
| Education centre | Access times agreed with staff; wet paint signed and taped |
Wire-brushing rust creates flakes and dust, so we sheet underneath and clear up each session. Wet sections are taped off and signed until the paint is touch-dry.
Colour on these sites is usually set by the owner or trust rather than chosen fresh, so we match the existing finish unless told otherwise. Where gates are in daily use, such as a pedestrian gate at a nursery entrance, we paint the closing faces and latch area at the end of a session so the gate can be shut and secured overnight without sticking to the post.
Rust and exposure on the northern edge
Metalwork on high, open ground takes rain from more directions than a sheltered garden gate, and the estate is bordered by Talavera Way, Moulton Way and the Moulton Bypass, where road spray and grime settle on railings near the edges. Grime holds moisture against the metal. Before any rust treatment, those lengths are washed and dried, then taken back to sound metal by scraping and wire brushing, treated, primed with a rust-inhibiting primer and finished in two coats. The full method, including which metals need which primer, is on our main metal gate and railing painting page.
Trade units just to the west

Moulton Park Industrial Estate adjoins Moulton Leys to the west, across Northampton Lane South, and Round Spinney Industrial Estate lies beyond the bypass to the east. Units there are within a mile of the estate, and any security gates, handrails or barrier rails on those premises can be quoted alongside other commercial painting. Work would be timed to suit the business’s opening hours as agreed on site.
For anything else on the estate, see our Moulton Leys area page.
