DH Painter & Decorator repaints metal gates, railings, balustrades and steel doors in New Duston, the NN5 neighbourhood beside the A428, 2.8 miles from central Northampton. That covers houses and older properties, the local shopping parades and units on the Lodge Farm Industrial Estate next door.
Where the metalwork is
New Duston is not a district of long Victorian railings. Its metalwork is more scattered, and it falls into three fairly distinct groups, each with its own problems:
- Homes: gates and short runs of railing at some of the older properties near the Port Road shops, plus handrails and balustrades at purpose-built flats
- Parades: railings, rails and shutters around the small local shopping centres on Port Road, Harlestone Road, Quarry Road, Main Road and Woodley Chase
- Industrial: steel doors, fencing and railings at the Lodge Farm Industrial Estate on the far side of Harlestone Road
Main Road still has the British Timken works gates. The roller-bearing factory opened in 1941-42, closed in 2002 and was cleared for housing, but the gates were kept, and Duston Parish Council has owned them since 2022. They show how much a set of gates can say about a street’s past, which is a fair reason to keep old ironwork painted rather than replaced.
Rust on a main road and under trees

Two local conditions speed up corrosion. Metalwork facing the A428 picks up traffic grime and, in winter, spray from a gritted road, and both hold moisture against the steel. At the other edge of New Duston, gates and railings near Harlestone Firs and the plantations sit in shade and leaf litter, so they stay wet longer after rain. In both cases paint breaks down first at the feet of the bars, the hinge pins and the welded joints, which is where we look first.
Our preparation follows what we find. Light surface rust is wire-brushed and sanded back to a sound edge. Heavier, flaking rust is scraped and abraded until bright metal shows, then treated with a rust-inhibiting primer the same day so it does not flash-rust overnight. Old, thick paint that has lost its grip is taken off rather than painted over. Only then do the undercoat and finish go on.
Industrial steel at Lodge Farm
The units on the Lodge Farm Industrial Estate sit right next to New Duston across Harlestone Road. Steel personnel doors, roller shutter housings, security fencing and stair rails there need a different approach from a domestic gate. Galvanised steel, which is common on industrial fencing, has to be cleaned and treated with a suitable etch or primer before any topcoat will stick. Bare mild steel needs an industrial-grade anti-corrosive primer. We agree working areas around deliveries and vehicle movements so the yard keeps running while we paint. Larger commercial jobs sit under our commercial painting service.
Matching the coating to the metal

| Metal | Where you might find it locally | Primer and finish |
|---|---|---|
| Wrought or cast iron | Any older gates surviving at the original cottages | Careful hand prep, rust-inhibiting primer, gloss or satin metal paint |
| Mild steel | Modern house gates, flat balustrades | Remove rust to sound metal, anti-corrosive primer, two finish coats |
| Galvanised steel | Industrial fencing and rails at Lodge Farm | Degrease, etch or specialist primer, then topcoat |
| Painted steel shutters and rails | Shop parades | Clean, key, direct-to-metal or primer and finish chosen for wear |
Planning rarely comes into it: house railings here can normally be repainted without consent, since New Duston lies beyond Old Duston’s conservation boundary. Full details of our preparation are on the main metal gate and railing painting service, and everything else we cover nearby is on the New Duston page.
