DH Painter & Decorator paints the outside of homes in Bellinge, the 1970s-80s estate in Billing parish about 3.5 miles east of Northampton town centre. Dean handles the timber joinery, previously painted brick and wall panels on these houses, and plans each job around the Radburn footpath layout and shared parking.
An estate built from scratch, not a village grown from stone
Bellinge sits between Little Billing and Great Billing, but it has little in common with either of them on the outside. Those two places grew from old villages with ironstone and limestone cottages. Bellinge was laid out by the Northampton Development Corporation in the 1970s and 1980s as a new-town estate for London overspill, and its houses are modern estate construction. In the core Census area there were 258 terraced homes in 2021, with 100 semis, 36 detached houses and 23 flats making up the rest.
That changes what exterior painting means here. Instead of breathable limewash on rubble stone, the work is usually timber doors and frames that have not yet been swapped for uPVC, any rendered or clad panels, and brick that a previous owner has already painted. Most of these surfaces are now 40 to 50 years old and carry several layers of earlier coatings, so a walk round to see what is on each elevation comes before any talk of colours.
Our general method for outside work is on the main exterior painting page. This page covers what is particular to the estate.
When the front door opens onto a footpath

The estate follows Radburn principles, which keep walkers and cars apart. Homes are grouped in named courts and squares reached from Fieldmill Road and Fishponds Road, such as Gallfield Court, Hanemill Court, Kingscroft Court, Palmer Square and Gervase Square, and many front doors face a path or a green, not a road. For an outside job that means:
- Parking is shared, so the van may sit some distance from the house. Dean loads only what each stage needs and plans the days to cut down on trips.
- Ladders and dust sheets often stand on a public footpath. A clear route is kept for people walking past, with barriers where a ladder foot sits on the path.
- A mid-terrace house has no side passage. Anything for the back elevation is carried through the house, so floors along that route are protected first.
Colour choices that sit in a row
There is no conservation area on the estate and no listed building, so you are free to choose any exterior colour. Great Billing Conservation Area, just to the north-east, is a different matter. The constraint in Bellinge is visual, not legal. With terraces making up most of the core estate, your front door, frames and any painted panels are seen as part of a row, alongside neighbours who may have uPVC in white, wood-effect or grey.
We usually suggest standing back on the footpath before picking a shade. A strong colour can look good on a single door, but several bold choices side by side in a court can clash. If you would like a second opinion, our colour advice is offered alongside the painting.
Washing off the A45 before the first coat

The A45 Nene Valley Way runs along the southern edge of Bellinge and the Great Billing Interchange sits on its eastern side. Houses nearest those roads collect a grey film of traffic dirt on sills, door panels and painted brick. Paint laid over that film does not bond properly, so on those houses the first visit includes a thorough wash and time to dry.
On the northern side, homes backing onto Great Billing Park and Church Field are more likely to have green growth on shaded walls and timber. Those get a biocide treatment instead of a simple wash. Many houses need some of both, depending on which way each elevation faces.
Preparation on ageing estate surfaces
The Town and Country Planning Association has noted that some of Northampton’s eastern estates need significant renewal. On individual houses that tends to show as cracked filler around frames, bare timber at the bottom of door frames and earlier coats peeling from sills. Expect more of the time to go on scraping, filling, spot-priming and sealing stains than on the finishing coats. Our exterior painting season guide explains why this preparation is booked for the drier months.
Bellinge is about 3.5 miles from our Northampton base, which lies to the west of the estate. For more about the estate as a whole, see the Bellinge area page.
