Dean carries out commercial painting and decorating in Spinney Hill, NN3, where the school, care and retail premises sit 2.1 miles north-east of central Northampton. The non-domestic buildings here are mainly schools, care services and the Manfield Health Campus, plus a handful of shops, takeaways and the Spinney Hill pub, and most of them stay in use while the painting is done.

Who needs a commercial painter in Spinney Hill?

Spinney Hill is mostly a residential area, but its non-domestic buildings are bigger than you might expect. Northampton School for Girls sits on Spinney Hill Road, along with its Spinney Hill Theatre, and there are primary and nursery schools nearby. Kettering Road has the Manfield Health Campus and several registered care services. The retail side is small: a couple of supermarkets, takeaways, the Sweet Machine on Churchill Avenue with its post office counter, and the Spinney Hill pub. Each of these has its own constraints, and none of them can easily close while the decorating is done. Our main commercial painting page covers how we quote, schedule and insure commercial work in general. Below is what applies to the premises here.

Care homes and the health campus: decorating around residents

In a care setting, people live in the rooms around the job. That means:

  • low-odour, water-based paints that dry quickly, so a corridor or lounge can go back into use the same day;
  • working one room or corridor section at a time, agreed with the manager so residents can be moved without disruption;
  • keeping stepladders, dust sheets and open tins out of escape routes and away from residents at all times;
  • durable, wipeable finishes on handrail zones and doors that are cleaned often.

Clinical and treatment rooms on a health campus follow the same principle, with the timing set by the building’s own schedule.

Schools: using the quiet weeks

School painting is usually done in the holidays, when classrooms, corridors and halls can be cleared. For a school on Spinney Hill Road there is another practical point. The road outside gets very busy at drop-off and pick-up time, so even during term-time preparation visits we arrive and unload outside those times. A theatre or performance space needs dark, low-sheen finishes where lighting matters and hard-wearing paint backstage, and it has its own calendar of performances to plan around.

The Spinney Hill pub on Kettering Road dates from the mid-1930s and is locally listed. It has green tiled roofs and a central block with small pavilions. An exterior repaint should keep to that original character instead of covering the frontage in brand colours that ignore the building. Kettering Road is also a busy bus corridor, so the front of anything facing it collects a film of traffic grime. Painting over that film leads to poor adhesion, so washing down comes before any coat. We plan ladder work on the road side away from peak traffic, and inside we can decorate in stages around trading hours.

Beyond the residential streets

Moulton Park business area is a short trip from Spinney Hill, though it isn’t part of the district itself, and we cover units there as well. Dean is fully insured for commercial work and provides written quotes, and our cost guide sets out what affects the price of a commercial job, from access equipment to phased working. The Spinney Hill area page has more on the area itself.

Commercial painting in Spinney Hill: your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call us on 07539 779 036 and we'll happily talk it through.

Can you paint a care home in Spinney Hill without moving residents out?

Usually, yes. Care services along Kettering Road stay occupied, so Dean works room by room or one corridor section at a time, using low-odour, quick-drying water-based paints. Each area can then go back into use quickly. The order of work is agreed with the manager beforehand so residents are not disturbed more than necessary.

When would you paint a school on Spinney Hill Road?

Main classroom and corridor work suits the school holidays, when rooms can be cleared. For any visit near Northampton School for Girls, we arrive and unload outside the drop-off and pick-up times, because Spinney Hill Road gets very busy then. Small jobs can sometimes be done after school hours in term time.

Does the Spinney Hill pub's local listing affect repainting its exterior?

The mid-1930s pub on Kettering Road is locally listed, with green tiled roofs and a pavilion layout. Local listing is less strict than national listing, but repainting should still keep the building's original character. Check with the council before making major changes to its appearance. Like-for-like repainting is a simpler matter.

Why does the front of a Kettering Road building need washing before painting?

Kettering Road is a busy bus corridor, and front walls, frames and railings facing it build up a greasy film from traffic. Paint applied over that film can peel away early. We wash the surfaces down and let them dry before any primer or topcoat goes on, and we schedule work on the road side outside peak traffic.

What customers say about Dean

Most of our work comes from recommendations and returning customers. These are real reviews from customers after the job was finished, in their own words.

After completing my gates I was then assured Dean was more than competent to repaint the inside of my property from top to bottom. It’s a large 4 bedroom house and was done to a very high standard. Once again I would highly recommend him.

I contacted Dean to get the outside of the house painted; the house is all roughcast render. He has done a fantastic job; the house is looking brand new. The same he did for our garage, painted our bedrooms x2, did extra jobs for us like skirtings and door frames, and painted even our gates. I could not recommend him enough; he is attentive, smiling, always on time, and nothing too much; I am so happy with what Dean has done; he went above and beyond. I have recommended him to all my friends and family.
