Dean paints house interiors in Spinney Hill, NN3, the district around Spinney Hill Road and Kettering Road 2.1 miles from central Northampton. Most homes here are 1930s to 1950s bay-fronted semis, often extended at the back, so the work usually covers open-plan lounge-diners, bays and the join between old and new plaster.
Through lounge-diners and bay fronts
Most houses in Spinney Hill are three- and four-bedroom semis built between the 1930s and the 1950s, many with a bay at the front and a lounge that runs through to a dining area at the back. For interior painting, that layout matters more than the room count. A through lounge-diner is really two rooms opened into one, so it often has a beam or a step in the ceiling where the old wall stood, and two different light sources: the bay at one end and the garden window or patio doors at the other. Dean treats it as one space when choosing finishes, so the colour does not read as two shades meeting in the middle.
The bay itself takes more time than people expect. The walls are short and angled, the ceiling inside the bay is often a small separate panel with cracks along its joints, and the window board collects condensation in winter. We fill and, where needed, line cracking in the bay ceiling before it is painted, and the board gets a hard-wearing finish rather than leftover wall paint.
Where the original house meets the extension

Many Spinney Hill semis have been extended at the back with a family room, an annexe or a conservatory on a brick base. Inside, that leaves a line where 1930s or 1950s plaster meets modern plaster or plasterboard. The two take paint differently. The older walls may carry decades of emulsion and hairline cracks, while the newer side is smooth and far more absorbent. Painted with the same number of coats, the join can show as a band in raking light from the garden doors.
We deal with that in three steps:
- Bare new plaster gets a diluted mist coat first, as set out in our guide to painting new plaster.
- Cracks along the junction are raked out and filled with a flexible filler, because an extension and the main house can move slightly differently.
- Both sides get the same finishing coats, so sheen and colour match across the opening.
The room next to a conservatory deserves a mention too. On a south-facing plot it takes strong light through the glass, and a lower-grade emulsion can fade unevenly there. A good-quality matt holds its colour better.
Annexes, chalet homes and Manfield Grange flats
Not every interior here is a standard semi. One property listing in the area includes a one-bedroom self-contained annexe, and rooms like that behave like a small separate home: a kitchenette and a shower room in a few square metres. They need kitchen and bathroom grade paint that copes with steam, and a mould-resistant finish on the ceilings.
The chalet-style semis on Lindale Close have upstairs rooms partly under the roof slope. Sloping ceilings and dormer reveals are painted as ceiling, so the cut line sits where the slope meets the upright wall and stays sharp.
Manfield Grange is different again. The former Manfield Orthopaedic Hospital is Grade II listed, and the listing records interior panelling, plasterwork and a Jacobean staircase. If your flat or the communal areas include original features, check with the management company and West Northamptonshire Council before anything original is altered or painted for the first time. Dean will point out which surfaces are original before he quotes.
Planning the days around Kettering Road and the school

Interior jobs are less affected by weather, but the local roads still shape the day. Spinney Hill Road houses mostly have a drive at the front, so the van can often park off the road and dust sheets and steps come straight in through the front door. Houses opposite Northampton School for Girls see heavy traffic at drop-off and pick-up, so we arrive before the morning rush and avoid loading during the afternoon one.
