DH Painter & Decorator takes on commercial painting in St David's, NN2, about 1.9 miles north of Northampton town centre. The work here is small-scale: shop interiors along Newnham Road and in the two corner shops, community halls, health and education buildings, planned around opening hours and the people who use them.
Business premises in a mainly residential estate
St David’s is a housing district first. It has no business park or industrial estate, and its main retail is a short neighbourhood parade on Newnham Road with a Co-operative Food, St David’s News, a fish and chip bar, Newnham Stores and a bookmaker. There are also single corner shops: Sandip Stores on Cranford Road and Fourways newsagent on Rosedale Road. The rest of the non-domestic buildings are community and public premises: schools, Kingsthorpe Medical Centre on Eastern Avenue South, St David’s Church hall, the Drayton Centre and Thorpedale House on Drayton Walk, the Liburd Community Room and care and supported housing buildings.
That shapes the kind of commercial work that comes up. Jobs are usually a single shop floor, a back office, a hall or a set of corridors, rather than large commercial fit-outs. The bigger shopfronts, including Kingsthorpe Shopping Centre and the Harborough Road strip, are to the west in Kingsthorpe.
Shops that stay open while we paint

A corner shop such as the ones on Cranford Road and Rosedale Road has little floor space to close off. We plan these jobs in sections, moving shelving units with you, protecting stock with sheeting, and painting the area behind the counter and stockrooms when the shop floor is busiest. Water-based, low-odour paints are the default where food is sold, and we keep walkways and fire exits clear throughout.
For a takeaway, kitchen walls and ceilings take grease and steam, so preparation involves degreasing before anything else, and the finish needs to be washable. Outside, the parade fronts may also need fascia boards, doors and window frames repainting; that work is covered on our shopfront painting page.
Halls, surgeries, schools and care settings
Many of the larger non-domestic buildings in St David’s are used by the public on a fixed timetable, which decides when painting can happen:
- St David’s Church hall is hired out, so work fits around bookings, and can be split across weekdays when the hall is quiet.
- Kingsthorpe Medical Centre and similar clinical spaces need washable, low-odour coatings, with work kept to areas out of patient use and agreed with the practice.
- Schools such as Green Oaks Primary Academy, Purple Oaks Academy and Kingsthorpe Grove Primary School are usually painted in the school holidays, when corridors and classrooms are empty.
- Care and supported housing remain occupied, so we work in short, quiet sections and agree each day’s area with staff.
The Drayton Centre and Thorpedale House sit among the Drayton Walk flat blocks, so the van uses the shared parking there and work is set out so residents walking past the building keep a clear route. Communal rooms like these take the same hard knocks as a church hall and suit the same scrubbable finishes.
The Grade II listed St David’s on Harborough Road, now a care home, is the one building where the owner should confirm with the council what counts as maintenance before we quote.
Planning access, parking and paperwork

Parking around the parade and the terraced streets is mostly on-street, and the Drayton Walk area has shared bays, so we agree van space and delivery times before the start. Many community organisations need risk assessments and evidence of insurance before work begins; we are fully insured and can supply what you need with the quote. We can also give a written schedule showing which rooms are out of use and when.
For how we organise commercial work in general, see our main commercial painting page. Other services we cover locally are listed on our St David’s area page.
