Dean stains and paints timber fences, posts and gates in Weedon Bec, NN7, about 8 miles west of Northampton. Most of the work is in the estate gardens around Cavalry Fields, Harmans Way and Holm Close, with tougher conditions for gates on the higher ground to the south.
Estate gardens: lap panels, posts and side gates
Weedon’s 20th-century growth went north, south and west of the old core, as lower-density estates laid out on loop roads and cul-de-sacs, and the newest homes went up at Harmans Chase, east of the depot entrance. Gardens there are typically bounded by softwood panel or feather-edge fencing with timber side gates, the kind of timber that goes grey and dry after a few summers. Driveway parking on Cavalry Fields, Harmans Way and Holm Close means we can unload close to the garden, which helps on a long fence run. We brush the stain in rather than spray it, working into lap overlaps and down board edges, and cover borders and shrubs along the line. A boundary shared with a neighbour is only done on your side unless they agree.
Old and new panels at Harmans Chase

Harmans Chase is the newest part of the village, with 62 homes completed between 2011 and 2014, so its original fencing is now more than a decade old and panels get replaced as they fail. New pressure-treated boards hold moisture, and stain applied too soon either soaks in patchily or sits on the surface and flakes. Where fresh panels sit beside weathered ones, we check how wet the new boards are, follow the product guidance on waiting time, and choose a colour that pulls old and new together.
Weather on Weedon Hill and Farthingstone Road
South of the village the land rises to Weedon Hill at 162 metres, Round Hill and along Farthingstone Road, part of a special landscape area. Gates and fencing on these slopes, and on the farm properties in Upper Weedon, take more wind and driving rain than sheltered estate gardens. That changes the choice of finish:
- A pigmented stain or fence paint lasts longer than a clear or lightly tinted product in full exposure.
- Gate tops and the end grain of rails are sealed carefully, because that is where water gets in first.
- Hardwood field or drive gates usually get a penetrating oil or stain that can be topped up, rather than a film that peels.
Barns and outbuildings on Upper Weedon farm properties can have timber doors and boarding that fall into the same category.
Low ground and wet fence bases

Parts of Weedon sit low. Much of the field east of Manor Farm is in Flood Zone 2 or 3, and surface water has flooded the village centre and South Street several times, most recently in November 2024 and March 2025, and the culvert failure on the Whettles footpath sent water into St Peters Way and Martins Way. Where fence posts and gravel boards have stood in water, the bottoms stay damp for a long while. We let the timber dry, scrub off silt and algae, and pay extra attention to the lowest boards, which is where stain wears through first in these gardens.
Booking the work
Fence staining needs dry timber and a dry forecast, so spring to early autumn is the usual window; our guide on exterior painting weather explains why. Fences often go alongside other outside work on the same house, but a fence on its own is fine too. Our main fence and gate staining page covers products and preparation, and the Weedon Bec page covers the rest of the village.
Colour is easier to choose with the house in view. A mid-brown or muted green usually sits more comfortably next to ironstone or old red brick than a bright orange cedar tone. Where a fence belongs to a rented home on Queens Park, Princes Close or Oaklands, the landlord or housing provider normally needs to agree the colour before we start.
