DH Painter & Decorator paints interiors in Stoke Bruerne, the NN12 canal village about 6.6 miles south of Northampton. Dean matches the paint to the wall: breathable finishes on the old solid limestone, a mist coat on new plaster in conversions, and standard emulsion in the modern houses.
Thick limestone walls around the green and on the Lanes
The oldest homes in Stoke Bruerne are small cottages from the 1600s and 1700s of coursed limestone rubble, built close together and hard up against the lane. Old Dower House on the green is dated 1636 and is a lobby-entry plan, where the front door opens onto a small lobby beside the central chimney stack. Rosebud Cottage on the green and The Welland on Mill Lane are thatched as well. Inside houses like these the walls are solid stone with no cavity, so any damp in the masonry has to escape through the inside face.
That decides the paint. A vinyl emulsion or a modern acrylic over old lime plaster stops the wall drying out, and the usual result is blistering, flaking and a musty patch behind the sofa within a few years. On these walls we use breathable claypaints, mineral paints or soft distemper-type finishes, and where an earlier owner has rolled vinyl over lime we talk you through whether to strip it back or work around it. Low ceilings, deep window reveals and old timber lintels also slow the cutting in, and that extra time is built into the quote rather than the edges being rushed.
Several of these cottages are Grade II listed, including Old Dower House, Hoperidge Cottage, Rosebud Cottage and The Welland. If yours is one of them, stripping historic finishes inside can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is scraped off.
Barn conversions where old and new walls meet

The U-plan farm buildings on Rookery Lane were built as a model farmyard for the 4th Duke of Grafton in the years 1839 to 1844, and they are now four homes. Because the village is a Restricted Infill Village, conversions like these and small infill are most of what gets built here. A converted barn often has original stone walls in one part of a room and fresh gypsum plaster or plasterboard in another.
Those two surfaces need different treatment side by side. New plaster takes a diluted mist coat before any colour goes on, while the old stone sections take a breathable paint. Getting a matching colour across both means picking compatible products from the start, then checking the sheen once both are dry. Our guide to painting new plaster with a mist coat covers the plaster side in more depth.
Wentworth Way, Chapel Lane and the newer houses
After 1951 the village gained a cluster of affordable homes at Wentworth Way, with more along Chapel Lane, and later infill added detached houses and semis to Mill Lane, Rookery Lane and the south-west of the village. These are ordinary modern builds with plasterboard or skimmed walls, so standard emulsions, washable finishes in kitchens and bathrooms, and satinwood or eggshell on the woodwork all work as normal. The full approach to prep and finishing is on our main interior painting page.
Getting the van, the dust sheets and the ladders in

Few of the old cottage plots can be reached from behind, and outside residents’ own cars the yellow lines in the village are policed firmly. The two dead-end lanes, Mill and Chapel, are tight for a van to turn in. Before the first day we agree where we will unload, and if nothing is free near the house we leave the van in the museum’s paying car park and walk dust sheets, trestles and tins up to you. In summer the canalside visitors make parking much tighter, so for houses close to the canal an autumn, winter or early spring booking is usually easier. Everything comes and goes through your front door, so we sheet the hall and the route through the house as well as the room being painted.
We cover Stoke Bruerne from our Northampton base. Room size and wall condition both shape a quote, and our guide to decorating costs explains how. The village overview covers outside work and the other services we offer here.
