Dean paints walls, ceilings and woodwork inside homes across Weston Favell, about 2.9 miles north-east of Northampton town centre in NN3. In the old village core that means breathable paints on solid stone walls and care with listed interiors; in the surrounding suburban streets it is ordinary redecoration.
Two very different housing stocks share one name
Weston Favell is really two places for an interior painter. The first is the old village: the conservation area stretching back from the A4500 past St Peter’s Church to Church Way, built mostly in coursed limestone rubble between the 17th and 19th centuries. The second is everything Northampton built around it from the 1920s onwards, the detached, semi-detached and terraced houses and leasehold flats on roads like Pyket Way and Thorburn Road.
The paint, the preparation and the paperwork are different for each, so the first thing Dean asks when you get in touch is which side of that line your house sits on. A 20th-century semi off Park Way is a straightforward job. A cottage on the north end of High Street might not be.
Solid limestone walls and the paint that suits them

The village cottages were built with solid stone walls and no cavity, and the older ones are likely to have lime plaster on the inside face. Lime moves moisture through the wall and lets it out again. Cover it with a modern vinyl emulsion and that moisture gets trapped behind the film, which is how you end up with blistering, flaking and the musty patch that keeps coming back by the skirting.
On those walls we use breathable paints, typically a clay-based or mineral emulsion, or a traditional flat finish where the plaster calls for it. We test what is already on the wall before choosing, because a cottage that has been redecorated many times may already carry layers of modern paint, and the new coat has to stick to what is there. Hairline cracks in old plaster are filled with a compatible soft filler rather than a hard one that will crack out again.
Ceilings in these houses are often uneven and rooms are rarely square. We cut in by eye to the line of the room, not to a spirit level, so the edge looks right rather than looking like it was ruled on.
Listed interiors: check before the brush comes out
Thirteen buildings in the conservation area are listed, among them The Grange, Hervey’s Cottage, The Priory and a cluster of High Street cottages. Listing covers the inside as well as the outside. Like-for-like redecoration is usually fine, but stripping historic finishes, changing a room’s character or removing old plaster can need listed building consent.
If you own one of these houses, speak to the council’s conservation officer before we start anything beyond a straight repaint. We will tell you honestly where we think a job crosses that line, and we would rather wait for an answer than redo work.
Getting materials in on narrow pavements and behind walls

At the Wellingborough Road end of High Street, front doors open almost straight onto the footway, so dust sheets, steps and tins come in through the front door straight off a narrow footway. Further south and along Church Way, many plots sit behind high stone boundary walls, which means a longer carry through a gateway and across a garden. The road through the old core is narrow and leaves little kerb space. None of this stops the job, but we plan deliveries and van parking before day one so the street is not blocked.
The suburban side of Weston Favell is simpler: driveways, standard plasterboard or gypsum-skimmed walls and room sizes that make for an efficient day’s work. There we can usually turn round a living room, hall or bedroom quickly, with the furniture moved, covered and put back.
Flats and apartments in the former parish
The former Manfield Hospital, an Arts and Crafts stone house from the turn of the 20th century, has been divided into apartments, and leasehold flats appear in the area’s sold-price records. Painting a flat means checking the lease and any building rules on access and working hours first. Shared areas are normally the freeholder’s or management company’s responsibility, so we price the inside of your flat on its own.
