DH Painter & Decorator paints fascias, soffits, bargeboards and gutters on homes in Spencer, NN5, which lies a mile from the town centre beyond Spencer Bridge Road. Low bungalow eaves can often be reached from steps or a low platform, while the estate's two-storey semis usually need a tower.
Eaves height decides the job
In Spencer, the biggest single factor in a roofline repaint is how high the boards are. The estate mixes two-storey semis from the 1930s to the 1950s with terraced and semi-detached bungalows from around 1970, and the difference in access between them is large. That affects how long the work takes, what equipment comes to site and how much of your driveway or garden is in use while it happens.
| Home type | Typical streets | Usual access |
|---|---|---|
| Bungalows | Gladstone Road, Spencer Haven, Cardigan Close | Steps or a low platform; no scaffold in most cases |
| Two-storey semis and short terraces | Pembroke Road, Tenby Road, Swansea Road, Monmouth Road, Warren Road | Mobile tower, moved along the elevation |
| Flats and maisonette blocks | Newport Road, Cardigan Close, Countess Road | Arranged with the managing agent or housing provider |
A bungalow roofline is close enough to work on comfortably, so the preparation can be thorough without the cost and disruption of scaffolding. On a semi, the tower needs firm, level ground along the side and front, which the side access common on these estate layouts usually provides.
Timber, uPVC or a mix of both

Many Spencer homes may already have uPVC fascias, often fitted around the time the windows were replaced, and some have a mixture: plastic fascia boards with original timber soffits, or a uPVC front with painted timber bargeboards on the gable. Before quoting, Dean checks which is which. Timber is probed for soft spots at board ends and joints, where gutter leaks soak in. Sound timber is scraped, sanded, spot-primed, undercoated and finished in exterior gloss or satin, as set out on our main fascia and soffit painting page.
Weathered uPVC can be cleaned, and if you want a colour change it can be painted with a primer made for plastics, but sound white uPVC usually only needs a wash. We would rather tell you that than sell you a repaint you do not need.
The higher streets and the main roads
Rooflines are the most exposed painted surface on any house, and in Spencer exposure rises with the ground. The top of Gladstone Road sits over 80 metres up, some 16 metres above Lyttleton Road, and boards facing the prevailing weather there wear faster. Bargeboards on gable ends take the worst of it, so their end grain is sealed with particular care.
Gutters and fascias on houses facing Spencer Bridge Road or Harlestone Road carry traffic grime on top of the usual moss and bird mess. They are washed and degreased before sanding, otherwise the dirt is just ground into the new paint. Working on a main-road frontage also means planning where the van and tower go, which is agreed with you beforehand.
Shared rooflines and rented homes

On a pair of semis, the fascia often runs straight across both houses. Painting one half in a new colour leaves a hard line at the party wall, so it is worth a word with your neighbour; some owners split the job and have both halves done together. On social-housing streets such as Pembroke Road, Cardigan Close and Spencer Haven, the roofline belongs to the landlord, and in the managed blocks on Countess Road and Newport Road it is handled through the agent or housing provider.
For a free quote, Dean will look at the boards from the ground and close up, then explain what is timber, what is plastic and what needs doing. The cost guide explains what affects the price, and the Spencer area page covers other work locally.
